Dolphin asks for help from people

Good day all, I don’t know about you, but I could use something a little bit different today. In this case, I read a story about how a dolphin that was tangled up with some fishing line went up to some divers and basically asked for help getting freed.

This happened in Hawaii on January 11th, 2013 and is rather remarkable. There are many stories of Dolphins helping helping people, but other then stories about fishing boats putting divers in the water to push trapped dolphins out of the nets, I’ve never heard of anything like this. Here is the story from the Daily Mail:

A dolphin tangled in fishing line sought help from a diver in the waters of Hawaii.

The amazing encounter on January 11 was captured on video and the diver, Keller Laros, spent the better part of eight minutes tending to the needy mammal who readily accepted the help. The diver explained, ‘The way he came right up and pushed himself into me there was no question this dolphin was there for help.’

As I said above, there are many stories of wild dolphins coming to aid people in the water or just come over and play with them. With very few exceptions, people like dolphins and do not want to harm them.

The diver said that the animal patiently and calmly allowed him to work to remove the fishing line.

‘I’ve had bottlenose dolphins approach me a lot of times and they are really smart animals,’ Laros, Laros, a professional scuba instructor and Manta Ray researcher, explained.

Mr Laros did remove the fishing hook and clipped the line that was near the mouth but as other divers joined Laros and tried to remove more fishing line, the mammal swam off and did not return.

Below is the video of the encounter.

Normally, you should not approach and try to “Help” a dolphin or any other creature. In the case of strandings, about all you should do is call the nearest coast guard or marine institute to report the incident and perhaps pour water on the dolphins to keep their skin moist. This was a very unusual event. Here the dolphin came up to the divers, perhaps understanding that these clumsy creatures could help him. Perhaps it’s encountered kind people in the past and remembered them.

Still, it’s nice to see a happy ending.
