This is a story of What If. It hasn’t happened and with luck won’t happen. It is, however a possibility.

With the swearing in of the 112th congress, the lame duck 111th congress has finally come to an end. After the complete blowout of the Democrats in the midterm elections in which both the House and Senate reverted to Republican control, former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and lame duck Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, (Who lost his reelection bid buy an astronomical 20 points), decided to order a lame duck session, purportedly to come up with a budget after all the complaints about the “Deem and Pass” budget passed in July.
Many Republican members objected since the election had just demonstrated how thoroughly the American people had rejected the Liberal/Progressive ideas of the Obama administration. The new Republican leadership knew they couldn’t stop the stupidity coming from the house but were bound and determined to filibuster every single bill that came up before the senate.
They totally misread the true evil of what the Democrats had planned.
The Democrats decided that since an ungrateful electorate had voted them out of office, they were going to ram through every single thing on their wish list. With President Obama in the White House to provide cover for them, they knew it would be at least 2 years before the Republicans could do anything.
The first item on the Progressive agenda was Cap & Trade. It had been successfully stopped the previous year, but now they brought it back with a passion. It cleared the house with the vote along party lines and went to the Senate. The Republicans began their filibuster to kill the bill.
This is when Harry Reid dropped the “Nuclear Option.”
When the C&P bill came up and the filibuster began, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid raised a point of order saying the debate had gone on long enough. The procedural back and forth began, but within an hour the filibuster was dead. Shortly thereafter the Cap & Trade bill was passed with a simple majority vote and sent to the White House for Obama’s signature.
After that the Democrat wish list went through fast and furious.
Next came the gifts for the Unions. First was the Employee Free Choice Act better known as Card Check. This took away the secret ballot from workers when a union wanted to organize a work place. It also stripped the rights of business owners to fight off unions.
After that came the federal bailouts of the union pension funds.
Then came the Value Added Tax. This was rammed through on a voice vote in the house and sent to the senate. Within 24 hours it had been passed and signed into law by Obama.
The next order of business was re-imposition of the “Fairness Doctrine” better known as the “Hush Rush” law. It was included in a package titled as “The American Fair Elections Act,” one of the most anti-first amendment laws to be passed since the Sedition acts.
Other sections of the new law restricted the rights of grass roots groups like the Tea Party which had proven so effective in the last election, preventing corporations spending money in support of candidates, which was a response to the Supreme Court’s recent decisions, and in the most egregious assault, forcing “Bloggers” to provide equal time/space to opposing views.
Of course they carved out special exemptions for their pet blogs like the Huffington Post and the Daily Kos. The whole point of the exercise was to shut down any possibility of dissent against the progressive doctrine. A bone was thrown to what is known as the Main Stream Media to quiet them down.
For years the major news organizations had been sliding into bankruptcy. They had been cheer leading the Democrats for decades and the result had been people ignoring them. Advertising in major papers and magazines had all but collapsed with the rise of the Internet and most of the Cable News channels were considered a joke by most people. The one exception was Fox News. They had been growing in leaps and bounds by the simple method of not treating their viewers as idiots. The new Fairness Doctrine was designed to pretty much close Fox down.
Almost immediately court challenges were filed. However, since the Democrats had spent the last few years putting their like minded friends on the bench, most of the challenges were thrown out. A few hit the courts of judges who believed in the constitution and who issued orders forbidding the enforcement of the new laws.
Then came the disaster.
Anton Scalia suffered a massive heart attack and died November 29th.
Within hours Obama had someone nominated to replace him. The selection was a shock. Obama nominated Goodwin Liu to be the next justice. His reasoning was that Professor Liu had already gone through most of the validation when he had been nominated for the 9th circuit court.
The Republicans were horrified at the choice. They had been fighting Liu’s appointment for a year. His contempt for the rule of law and the Constitution, not to mention his views on racial preferences were beyond the pale.
They quickly prepared to stop this, but Harry Reid bypassed the Senate judicial committee and sent the nomination directly to the floor for a vote. He was confirmed on a party line vote. The Democrats now had control of the Supreme Court. In the next week, Justice Ruth Bader-Ginsburg announced she was leaving due to ill health. This brought up another nomination. What no one expected was that it would be Eric Holder. Of course he was also slammed through and sworn in as the newest Justice.
While all this was going on, the House was passing laws that essentially nationalized the oil industry, massive new taxes on people making more then $100K/year, a 90% tax rate on bonuses and an increase in the gas tax to $3/gallon. The topper was the defacto nationalization of the Health Care industry. Overnight, Doctors and nurses were told they were now government employees and would have their pay rates set by the Department of Health and Human Services.
The next major piece of legislation was the Immigration Reform Act of 2010. This was nothing less then a complete amnesty for illegal aliens. All they had to do was appear at any immigration office pay the filing fees, file the paperwork for legal status, and a green card. Additionally, it also changed the rules for gaining citizenship, basically reducing the time line to 1 year and with no citizenship tests required.
Obama signed all of this into law as soon as it arrived on his desk.
Of course, the stock markets reacted as expected. By the time the 112th Congress was sworn in the market had collapsed and was now trading at the 3000 level. It hadn’t been this low since the Reagan Administration and then it was on its way up, not down.
Small businesses and major corporations began sending out mass layoff notices as the economy began tanking. It was estimated that by February the unemployment rate would hit 20% with no end in site. Around the world, national economies were beginning to collapse into what was looking like another Great Depression.
The final act of the Lame Duck Congress was the passing of the Federal Retirement Investment Security Act. This was the outright seizure of all 401K and IRA accounts. Literally trillions of dollars was pulled from private accounts and placed under the control of the Social Security Administration. The excuse was the collapse of the stock market which the Democrats said proved that only the government could guarantee the people’s retirement benefits.
The anger of the voters in America was frightening, and in one case resulted in an attack against a member of Congress. Representative Barney Frank, who had won reelection in Massachusetts was savagely beaten almost to death by a man who had lost his job and home.
What shocked the Media Mavens the most was that 2 police officers were nearby and ignored the attack for several minutes. They finally arrested the assailant who surrendered without incident other then kicking the prostrate Frank twice more in the head. As of this posting, Representative Frank is in a coma and it isn’t known if he will recover.
Now that the new Congress has been seated, the world awaits what will happen next. Already subpoenas are being issued to the Obama Administration. Calls for a special prosecutor to investigate the Administration are starting to be made.
The new Speaker of the House and Senate Majority Leader have already said that they will not pass any funding bills to enforce the new laws, and would begin the process of repealing the laws passed in the Lame Duck session.
The Democrats still in the Senate have stated they will filibuster any attempt to repeal the new laws and go to court if necessary. Obama, of course, has said that he is the president and that he will enforce all the new laws now passed.
Rumors have started that the Justice Department and the IRS are investigating the Republican Party and the new members of Congress. At this time we have been unable to verify these rumors…..
What I have just written is what some people refer to as “Future History.” This is what could happen if the Democrats lose both the House and Senate and decide to make the voters pay for rejecting them. Will this actually happen? Probably not, but don’t doubt for a minute that the current administration and the leadership of the House and Senate might consider a lame duck session to ram their agenda through.
