Leon Panetta tells congress Obama can start wars without them

Good day all. This came up yesterday and as you might expect, the MSM1 has pretty much tired to bury it. It seems that Obama prefers asking for permission from the UN to do things rather than deal with congress like he’s supposed to

What happened was both simple and astonishing. Secretary of Defense and former member of the House of Representatives, in testimony to the Senate Armed Services committee that in the case of armed conflict that the Administration didn’t need the permission of Congress.

From CNN:

In testimony to the Senate Armed Services Committee, Panetta had an exchange with Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Alabama, who said Congress was circumvented when Obama decided to join the NATO coalition in Libya.

Sessions said, “We spend our time worrying about the U.N., the Arab League, NATO and too little time, in my opinion, worrying about the elected representatives of the United States. As you go forward, will you consult with the United States Congress?”

Panetta replied, “You know, our goal would be to seek international permission. And we would come to the Congress and inform you and determine how best to approach this, whether or not we would want to get permission from the Congress.”

This pretty much set off Senator Jeff Sessions.

Latching onto the words “permission” and “inform,” Sessions ripped into Panetta: “Well I’m troubled by that. I think it does weaken the ability of the United States to lead. I do think ultimately you need the legal authority from the United States of America, not from any other extra-territorial group that might assemble.”

Senator Sessions pretty much bent over backwards to give Panetta the chance to correct his answer. Panetta didn’t take the offered lifeline.

But even when Sessions gave Panetta a chance to clarify, Panetta continued to say the U.S. would seek “permission” so that there was a legal basis to act.

At this point Sessions had enough of this nonsense.

“I’m really baffled by the idea that somehow an international assembly provides a legal basis for the United States military to be deployed in combat,” Sessions said. “I don’t believe it’s close to being correct. They provide no legal authority. The only legal authority that’s required to deploy the United States military is of the Congress and the president and the law and the Constitution.”

Panetta’s answer doesn’t surprise anyone who has watched Obama and the radical left. They have nothing but contempt for the Constitution and the rule of law. When Obama decided to start bombing Libya, he didn’t bother to even consult with the senior members of the house and senate. He just sent in the Navy at the behest of his masters in the European Union.

Now, the Progressives and Liberals, (But I repeat myself) will say that Bush took us into Afghanistan and Iraq in illegal wars. I’ve gone over this before. In both cases, Bush went to Congress BEFORE the shooting started. He was trying to pressure the Taliban in Afghanistan and Saddam Hussein in Iraq to acquiesce to our demands.2

Sessions was not happy with Panetta.

After the hearing, Sen. Sessions told Security Clearance in an interview that Panetta’s comments were “very revealing of the mindset” of the administration. Panetta “seemed so natural in expressing it as if he didn’t understand this went against” the fundamentals of our government.

Senator! Don’t you understand? It’s all about surrendering United States sovereignty to the United Nations, not about following that antiquated document we call “The Constitution.” After all, it just gets in the way of Obama’s plans for America. When will all these silly people learn that Obama and the Democrats only have our best interests and want to do what’s best for us. We don’t need to worry about little things like going to war. The over-educated Elites will handle everything for us!

Of course, this Bovine Droppings. If Bush or any Republican president had tried to do even one tenth of the garbage Obama has pulled, he would already be out of office and probably on trial.

Of course, the coverup explanations of what Panetta really meant are now underway.

The defense official, who did not identify himself because he did not want to speak publicly for the secretary, further explained the rationale for seeking international agreement.

“The legitimacy is greater if there is some form of international mandate. There’s a sense that unilateral U.S. action would be perceived in the wrong way, especially in this part of the world. Does the U.S. want to go it alone in another Arab country? That figures into the calculus.”

This defense official is probably an Obama appointee and not a member of the Military. I suspect that as this matriculates through the armed forces, a lot of soldiers, sailors, airman and marines are going to cringe and really start thinking about the oath they take when enlisting. Unlike Democrats and Liberals, (Yep, I know, repeating myself), they DO care about and support the Constitution.

More and more it’s coming out just how radical Obama and his minions are. A second term and you can bet that the members of Congress should just pack their bags and go back home. Obama will simply rule by decree, just like any African tyrant.

Considering just how spineless the current Republican leadership is, they will do nothing other than sit on the junior members who are fighting to stop Obama’s destruction of the United States.

Remember in November and defeat all Democrats and any Republicans who won’t do their constitutional duty.

FUNK66: Obama and Panetta declare Congress a ceremonial relic

The Defense Secretary responded “You know, our goal would be to seek international permission. And we would come to the Congress and inform you and determine how best to approach this, whether or not we would want to get permission from the Congress.” Despite Sessions’ repeated efforts to get Panetta to acknowledge that the United States Congress is supreme to the likes of NATO and the UN, Panetta exalted the power of international bodies over the US legislative branch.
