Texas about to allow open carry

Good day all. As I write this, Texas is about to allow the open carrying of sidearms for the first time in over a century.

When you tell people that Texas doesn’t allow the open carrying of a pistol, people look at you like you have three heads. They will say “But this is Texas! Everyone has a gun so they can shoot each other in the streets!” Actually, it isn’t true. In fact, they have only allowed concealed carry for a couple of decades and you have to have a permit.

Finally, after a ton of lobbying by pretty much anyone in Texas, the state has passed and sent to the desk of Governor Abbott a bill that allows people to carry a gun in plain sight. Here are a few details from The Washington Times:

Texans could soon be allowed to openly carry handguns, a change gun-rights activists have been seeking for years. On Friday the Texas House of Representatives voted 96-35 to allow Texans with concealed-handgun licenses to openly carry their guns in public in holsters, The Wall Street Journal reported Friday.

Those 35 no votes were Democrats of course.

A similar open-carry measure passed the Texas Senate last month. Both open-carry measures must be squared and sent to Republican Gov. Greg Abbott, who has indicated support for the idea, The Journal reported.

And you can expect a full court press by the Bloombots and Moonbats to derail this. As I mentioned before, Texas currently doesn’t allow open carry of pistols.

Texas is currently one of six states, including California, New York and Florida, that bars citizens from openly carrying handguns. But Texans can carry long guns in public, which has prompted gun-rights activists to carry assault rifles into restaurants and stores to highlight what they consider a senseless legal distinction.

There are many pictures of Texans strolling into Starbucks with an AR15 or an AK47 slung over their shoulders. When they were doing this, many people and groups said that this was hurting their cause. You also had several people who were arrested, (Usually in the Austin area), who were lawfully carrying their rifles ((News Texas Man Arrested, Tased For Openly Carrying Rifle While Walking Home)), ((Man who carried AR-15 on his back inside mall says charges not warranted)), ((Decorated Military Veteran Disarmed and Arrested in TX while Carrying Rifle on Boy Scout Hike)) and not making any sort of threats. Usually the excuse the police used was that they were “menacing” in some way. Many of the incidents were filmed and frankly, the police came off looking like jack booted thugs. Amazing how much has changed in a few years.

Gun-rights groups are also pushing for legislation to allow some students and university employees to carry concealed handguns on college campuses. The state Senate passed a campus-carry measure last month and the House is expected to pass a similar measure. Mr. Abbott also supports the campus-carry idea.

While moonbats and Bloombots loathe the idea of qualified students and others carrying on their precious ivory tower campuses, many more people support the idea for one simple reason. Right now, the only people carrying guns on campus are criminals or crazy people looking to robe, rape or kill someone.

That law would make Texas one of only eight states with campus-carry laws permitting guns on college campuses.

Frankly every state needs to allow people the means to defend themselves. The idea that you can just puke all over your attacker, or wet yourself is asinine. The best way to prevent crazy people or criminals from doing harm is to have people around who have the means to stop them. This business of Gun Free Zones has got to stop.

Hats off to Texas for finally joining states like New Hampshire that have had open carry for years.
