Beretta 92<\/a>, the civilian version of the Military M9. There were a couple of Glocks, a Smith&Wesson .357 and an M1922 .45. I got to try them all, and the others tried my gun. Mine was uniformly hated because of the trigger on it. It is what is called double action\/single action. This means that I pull the trigger the first time, the gun cocks and then fires. After that it is automatically cocked. Because of the stiff trigger pull on that first shot, it throws off your aim if you aren\u2019t used to it.<\/p>\nFor me, the Glocks weren\u2019t all that great. I did get a chance at the .45, and I was thrown by the safety on it. It works in the exact opposite of what I\u2019m used to. For my pistol, I push up and it\u2019s ready to fire. For the M1911, you have to pull down. The .357 was a revolver and while I have fired one in the past, it was almost 30 years ago. I will say it was the damn loudest gun there. I was able to hit the targets with all of them.<\/p>\n
I was taught various drills, such as clearing a jam, reloading, (and for those of you who think that limiting magazine capacity will save lives, think again. I sucked at it but it only took me a couple of seconds to switch out and start shooting again), accuracy, speed and stress shooting as well as learning how to fire an unfamiliar gun.<\/p>\n
Now, I fired off 300 rounds of ammunition, and that was my only complaint. The range charged $20 per box and I know I can get better deals elsewhere. Still, they are in business to make money and next time I will come with my own ammunition.<\/p>\n
I can\u2019t say enough about the instructors. Both were very competent, patient with a group of inexperienced shooters and entertaining as well. When we made mistakes, (And I made a few), they corrected us without resorting to Marine Drill Instructor methods.<\/p>\n
For targets, we were using paper plates at 15 feet. (3 yards) The reason was simple. They are cheap and easy to see. You would be surprised how hard it was to actually hit them. I would say I got a good 95% of my shots on target, but I did manage to miss a few that I should have made. I also found out that my pistol shoots low, in fact a good 4 inches low at that range. One of the instructors said it may be due to the fixed nature, and that they may be zeroed for longer ranges. I\u2019ll need to fire more at different ranges to know for sure.<\/p>\n
All in all, I had a good afternoon. One thing I can\u2019t stress enough, especially for those thinking of buying a gun, TAKE SOME CLASSES! The very first calls you should take is the basic safety classes. After all, you don\u2019t want to be like Diane Feinstein who takes a rifle and sweeps it across a room full of reporters WITH her finger on the trigger. On the other hand, it may have been intentional. After all, they are just reporters.<\/p>\n
Always remember the three rules.<\/p>\n
1) ALWAYS assume a gun is loaded.<\/p>\n
2) ALWAYS point it in a safe direction<\/p>\n
3) ALWAYS keep your finger OFF the trigger UNTIL you are ready to shoot.<\/p>\n
To which I will add:<\/p>\n
4) NEVER point a gun at anything you don\u2019t want to destroy.<\/p>\n
Now, for people in New Hampshire, call or email your representatives to stop HB 135. This is the bill I\u2019ve mentioned before that will repeal the stand your ground law in New Hampshire. If this is repealed, then crazy people and criminals will have far less to worry about when they go on a crime spree. Also, call or write your US Senators and representative and tell them they MUST uphold the second amendment and forget about all these unconstitutional gun bans the totalitarian progressive want to pass.<\/p>\n

<\/a>I signed up for a class called the Practical Handgun Clinic. It was given by a pair of instructors and differed in the usual safety classes. While they did stress safety, the also taught things like drawing and firing, situational awareness, gun malfunction drills and assorted target drills. Many a paper plate died today.<\/p>\n
