It’s been quite a while since I did a book review. Recently, I finished reading Mark Levin’s ((Mark Reed Levin)) new book, The Liberty Amendments: Restoring the American Republic.

The Liberty Amendmentsare 11 proposed changes to the United States Constitution designed to strip power away from the central federal government and return it to the states and the individuals. The amendments cover term limits for elected officials and judges. They also repeal 17th Amendment ((Seventeenth Amendment to the United States Constitution)) to the Constitution, taxation as well as restore property rights.

The Amendments also give the states the ability to overrule the judicial branch as well as the congress when they pass a law that isn’t popular. (Such as Obamacare) What is really interesting is that Mr. Levin doesn’t want to push the amendments through congress and then on to the states. He knows that the United States Congress will never allow these amendments to see the light of day.

What Mr. Levin proposes is to have the states call for a Constitutional Convention and then submit these amendments to the states, bypassing Congress. The very thought of the states calling a Constitutional Convention terrifies the political class on both sides of the aisle. In fact, Mr. Levin himself was opposed to the idea. So what changed his mind?

Simply put, he sees that the federal government has grown to large and is no longer responsive to the people. The bureaucracies have become a law unto themselves and our elected officials only care about keeping their perks and power. Although he doesn’t say it, Mr. Levin is probably thinking the alternative would be a violent revolt against Washington that could potentially kill millions of people.

The Amendments themselves are tightly written and easy to understand. I had a quibble with one or two, but only in some of the wording Mr. Levin used. (I think it might allow some weaseling by the political class) He also didn’t put anything in place to solidify the 2nd Amendment. (It may be that he thinks it’s just fine and the courts should try actually reading it for once)

Mark Levin is a conservative radio talk show host ((The Mark Levin Show)) as well as a lawyer. Now I will state that I don’t listen to his program, although I have heard some of his remarks that were posted on the internet. This is also the first book of his that I have read.

As I mentioned, the Amendments Mr. Levin has written are very tight and designed to limit the power of the Federal Government. Mr. Levin also details the history of the constitution with references back to the Federalist Papers as well as the Anti-federalist papers ((The Anti-Federalist Papers)). These writings are very dense, and you might be tempted to skip over them. I don’t recommend that. You will miss the scholarly writings of Mr. Levin as well as the original writers of the United States Constitution.

The Liberty amendments have only recently been published and it has taken off like a rocket. The book is on the New York Times bestseller list and has attracted the attention of the Tea party and Constitutional groups. They all see this as the last chance to stop the Federal Government before the United States collapses completely. Below is Mark Levin’s appearance on the Sean Hannity show n Fox where he explains what the Amendments are and why he wants to go the Constitutional Convention route.

[youtuber youtube=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vJdwc3q5s0o’]

I give this book 5 stars and I firmly believe that our last chance to regain our freedom without resorting to outright civil war may be just what Mr. Levin recommends. While I would like to post the actual amendments, it would probably be a violation of Mr. Levin’s copyright, not to mention that I don’t want to transcribe them by hand.
