I haven’t said anything about the Crimea situation. Not because I support the Putin’s conquest of that part of the Ukraine, but due to others far more knowledgeable about it then I am. One of those who thinks he’s more knowledgeable is Ron Paul.

Ron Paul ((Ronald Ernest “Ron” Paul)) was a Republican representative to Congress for something like 20 years off and on. Dr. Paul, and he is a real doctor, has always claimed he was a Libertarian and joined the Republican party for a myriad number of reasons, none of which are germane to this post. Ron Paul was probably the worst person in the world to try and represent the views of the Libertarian Party. I won’t go into all of his nutty positions, other then to say that if they were enacted, the United States would have been conquered and destroyed within a few years.

Dr. Paul stepped down from Congress in 2013, much to the relief of his son, Rand Paul. (Rand Paul holds a number of similar views as his father, but seems to understand that defending the United States is rather important). However, Dr. Paul has not gained any sanity since leaving office. Recently, he wrote a column regarding the recent rigged vote for Crimean independence. Here’s what this fool had to say:

Residents of Crimea voted over the weekend on whether they would remain an autonomous region of Ukraine or join the Russian Federation. In so doing, they joined a number of countries and regions — including recently Scotland, Catalonia and Venice — that are seeking to secede from what they view as unresponsive or oppressive governments.

This is wrong on so many levels it isn’t funny. First, the unresponsive government had just been removed from office. Second, the Crimea was invaded by Russian forces pretending to be Ukrainians. And that vote? 97% in favor of secession when the polls showed at best it was a 50/50 split?

These latter three are proceeding without much notice, while the overwhelming Crimea vote to secede from Ukraine has incensed U.S. and European Union officials, and has led NATO closer to conflict with Russia than since the height of the Cold War.

Oh, probably because it wasn’t much different from the way the Nazi’s took over the Sudetenland ((The Sudetenland)), Austria and a few other places prior to World War 2. Of course, there is the difference that no one was waving around a piece of paper claiming “Peace for our time!” That lead directly to the most horrific war in history.

What’s the big deal? Opponents of the Crimea vote like to point to the illegality of the referendum. But self-determination is a centerpiece of international law. Article I of the United Nations Charter points out clearly that the purpose of the U.N. is to “develop friendly relations among nations based on respect for the principle of equal rights and self-determination of peoples.”

Because it was a phoney vote rivaling those done in any totalitarian nation? You know, like those votes to elect the leaders of North Korea? Amazing how they get 100% of the vote isn’t it?

Critics point to the Russian “occupation” of Crimea as evidence that no fair vote could have taken place. Where were these people when an election held in an Iraq occupied by U.S. troops was called a “triumph of democracy”?

The column by this idiot continues in this vein, actually equating the United States attempt to have honest and fair elections in Iraq and Afghanistan with what happened in Crimea. As I recall, all the United States did was make sure people could vote and not worry about getting killed. Granted, things didn’t turn out the way we would have liked, but you know, that is the sign of a fairly honest election. In fact, I don’t believe the current office holders won with 97% of the voters supporting them.

Ron Paul and his supporters, generally known as “Paulnuts” really aren’t that much different from your average authoritarian. They claim to be about liberty and freedom, but they aren’t. The also are extreme isolationists and will quickly blame anything that happens on the United States.

Ron Paul is on record as saying the 9/11 attacks were due to the policies of the United States and has said that the United States shouldn’t have gone after Hitler and Nazi Germany. He forgot that Hitler declared war on us, not the other way around. If he hadn’t, there was a good chance that we wouldn’t have gotten involved in Europe and that the Nazi’s probably would have won. He also was about to vote no on the invasion of Afghanistan and going after Al Qaeda, and the only reason he voted yes was outright threats from his staff saying they would resign en mass if he did vote no.

Ron Paul is the worst sort of isolationist. In his world view, it doesn’t matter what happens anywhere else in the world. As far as he is concerned, the whole world would love America if we just minded our own business. Now the isolationist tendencies do run deep in Americans, but not the level of Ron Paul. Not only doesn’t he think we should be dealing with other nations, he also refuses to defend our own borders.

While in office, he refused to actually do anything to secure the borders against illegal aliens, and has also worked to gut the military. In his world view, the United States should not have a standing military, and that if we are attacked, we can raise, train and equip an army in very short order. This demonstrates his complete lack of understanding of both just how long it takes to train and equip a military force and why the United States doesn’t want to fight on our own territory if we can avoid it.

The first part, raising a military force can’t be done in months, it takes years. If it wasn’t for the fact that the United States had started switching to building military equipment in 1940, as well as increasing our troop levels, we might very well have lost World War Two. Today, it takes a year to build a fighter. It takes four years to build a carrier. Yes, we could probably cut that down a bit, but we also no longer have the manufacturing base we did in the 1940’s and 50’s.

As to the actual soldiers? Yes, they can run them through basic training in three months, but all you have is basically trained cannon fodder. To train a soldier properly takes an additional 1-2 years. For the technical fields such as pilots, it takes at least 2 years before someone is ready to take an F-15 into the air without an instructor. Training them to actually use that plane and win? Another year easily.

Then there is the second reason America doesn’t want to fight a war on United States soil. Modern weapons are highly destructive. Just take a look at Europe and Japan at the end of World War Two. In many places, there weren’t two bricks piled on each other. If you want an idea of what that would look like in the United States, take a look at the pictures from the American civil war and what the south looked like after Sherman, Sheridan and Grant were through with it.

Do we really want that to happen here? Of course not! That’s why we prefer to deploy overseas. Why destroy our infrastructure when we can destroy the enemies instead? This also fits in perfectly with the traditional way of waging war, American style. Hit the enemy with everything we can, as hard and fast as we can, and so pummel them that they wont’ be a threat to us ever again. (This is generally referred to as the “Jacksonian” way of warfare)

Ron Paul should do what General MacArthur did after he finally left the service. Just fade away. He can also take his Paulnuts with him. People like Ron Paul have caused death, destruction and human misery throughout history. They won’t stand up to bullies and are utterly selfish. Now as to Ron Paul’s son, Senator Rand Paul, I’m withholding judgment. He does have some of his fathers beliefs, but not all of them. He says and stands for a lot of what I do, but perhaps not enough.
