The Environmental Protection Agency is under fire for a preemptive strike against a massive copper and gold mine in Alaska, where hundreds of billions of dollars and thousands of jobs are at stake. <\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
Leave it to the EPA to launch a preemptive strike on prosperity. They would like nothing better then to evacuate all humans from Alaska and remove any indication that humans ever lived there. This includes the Inuit, (Eskimos). To continue…<\/p>\n The controversy centers on Pebble Mine, located 200 miles southeast of Anchorage. It is the largest deposit of copper and gold in North America. But environmental groups and fishermen, worried about the impact to the world\u2019s most abundant salmon run in Bristol Bay, fought the mine from the beginning. <\/i><\/p>\n \u201cIt was people from Alaska that requested the EPA come in and take action,\u201d said Tim Bristol, of Trout Unlimited in Anchorage. \u201cWe just don\u2019t feel like we\u2019re getting our concerns heard by the state of Alaska.\u201d <\/i><\/p>\n The EPA did act, using the 1972 Clean Water Act for the first time ever to stop a mine before the owners even came out with a detailed plan. <\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n From what I\u2019ve read, the mining company hadn\u2019t even put up a formal plan yet. Also it wasn\u2019t \u201cThe people of Alaska, it looks like it was one small group. As usual, the EPA acted without proper authority.<\/p>\n The company behind the mine claims the agency went too far. <\/i><\/p>\n \u201cThe intent of the EPA is to take on an authority that nowhere has Congress given them, to go across America and determine where development should occur and where it shouldn\u2019t occur before anyone ever files a permit,\u201d Pebble Limited Partnership CEO Tom Collier said. <\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n So Pebble Limited hadn\u2019t even asked for a permit to start digging? Now I\u2019m certainly no expert, (As many commentators have noted before on other posts), but doesn\u2019t part of the permitting process also include what\u2019s called \u201cMitigation?\u201d By that, I mean they have a plan to restore the land once they\u2019re done with it as well as make sure they don\u2019t damage anything like salmon runs during operations?<\/p>\n In 2011, Northern Dynasty finally issued an economic assessment of the Pebble Mine. It outlined three possible mines ranging from 25 years, up to 78 years. The smallest mine would extract 2 billion tons of material. The largest would mine 6.5 billion tons. The scenarios were used by the EPA in its study of the mine\u2019s potential impacts on the Bristol Bay watershed. <\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n Hmm, this sounds more like what they could dig out of the ground to me, rather then a detailed plan. Basically trying to determine if it was worth the money to dig the ore out. It doesn\u2019t look like it was a detailed operations plan at all. (Which would include things like protecting the environment and cleaning up the site when mining was concluded)<\/p>\n Pebble officials argue their economic assessment was not a mine plan and included none of the extensive mitigation program. <\/i><\/p>\n \u201cIt was an imaginary mine the EPA invented,\u201d said Washington Examiner columnist Ron Arnold<\/a>, who has written extensively on Pebble Mine. \u201cYou can\u2019t respect anything the EPA says.\u201d <\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n The EPA is out of control, and has approached levels of police state<\/a> tactics. To put it bluntly, they are no longer listening to anyone. This includes Congress and the Courts. In killing this mine, and there is some question on whether they can or not, they have once again announced that they don\u2019t care one whit about humans, only about worms and trees.<\/p>\n I\u2019m not going to go into that paranoid nonsense about \u201cAgenda 21<\/a>.\u201d I don\u2019t believe there is a concerted conspiracy to depopulate the middle of the country and force everyone into cities on the coasts.<\/p>\n However, actions like this from the EPA do nothing but give ammo to those people, be it sending in swat teams for no real reason other then intimidation, or killing projects like the Pebble Mine before they\u2019ve even formally made an application. That is one reason I say state governors should just tell the EPA that they are no longer welcome in their states and back it up with the use of force, if required. In my opinion, this should be handled locally between the mining company, the locals, the rest of the residents of Alaska and the state government.
