I have just discovered a new way to cook poultry that is totally green and only uses the power of the sun. Even better, the cooked bird is incredibly fresh when it is BBQ’d.

All you require is a flock of migratory birds, actually any birds at all that fly, and a massive solar power generation plant. “WTF?” You are asking? Well, it seems that there is a small problem with the solar farms and the mirrors they are using. Here are the details from Fox News:

Workers at a state-of-the-art solar plant in the Mojave Desert have a name for birds that fly through the plant’s concentrated sun rays — “streamers,” for the smoke plume that comes from birds that ignite in midair. Federal wildlife investigators who visited the BrightSource Energy plant last year and watched as birds burned and fell, reporting an average of one “streamer” every two minutes, are urging California officials to halt the operator’s application to build a still-bigger version.

Oh I can see it now. Along come Tweety Bird ((Tweety)) chirping happily as he flies over the desert, sneering at Sylvester ((Sylvester J. Pussycat, Sr)). All of a sudden, Tweety sees a bright flash, his feathers catch fire and before he knows it, he’s plowed into Sylvester’s waiting dinner plate. *Chomp* *Swallow* *Burp* and that’s it for Tweety.

The investigators want the halt until the full extent of the deaths can be assessed. Estimates per year now range from a low of about a thousand by BrightSource to 28,000 by an expert for the Center for Biological Diversity environmental group.

But…but…but Solar is good for the planet! Yeah, but it’s bad for any birds in the area dude.

The deaths are “alarming. It’s hard to say whether that’s the location or the technology,” said Garry George, renewable-energy director for the California chapter of the Audubon Society. “There needs to be some caution.”

Oh I think we can say it’s the technology. Just like the Avian Cuisinarts, better known as windmills, the Greenies haven’t really thought things through in their plans to kill nuclear and fossil fuel plants.

The $2.2 billion plant, which launched in February, is at Ivanpah Dry Lake near the California-Nevada border. The operator says it’s the world’s biggest plant to employ so-called power towers. More than 300,000 mirrors, each the size of a garage door, reflect solar rays onto three boiler towers each looming up to 40 stories high. The water inside is heated to produce steam, which turns turbines that generate enough electricity for 140,000 homes.

Now that’s pretty cool tech, so to speak. I seem to recall an experiment using the same process to incinerate toxic chemicals. Of course I might be remembering the plot to the movie Sahara. I have no idea if it worked and was ramped up to full production. Somehow, I think not or we would have heard about Condor Flambe some time ago. There is also another possible problem. Aircraft.

Sun rays sent up by the field of mirrors are bright enough to dazzle pilots flying in and out of Las Vegas and Los Angeles.

Personally, I think that’s a bit more concerning then instabaked birdy. Having a 737 crash into the desert because the pilots are flash blinded by those mirrors is going to make the airlines think twice about flying into Vegas. Then there is Nellis Air Force Base which is nearby. (Along with the mythical Area 51) If they lose a plane because of those mirrors, I wouldn’t be at all surprised if that complex suddenly suffered an accidental carpet bombing. Of course, the company is denying their systems have anything to do with the bird sized mounds of ash on the ground.

Ivanpah officials dispute the source of the so-called streamers, saying at least some of the puffs of smoke mark insects and bits of airborne trash being ignited by the solar rays.

I really doubt that Sparky. If a bumblebee happens to get torched, you won’t notice it in the glare. Barney the Bald Eagle suddenly doing an impression of a WW2 Japanese Zero ((Mitsubishi A6M Zero)) after a run in with the Flying Tigers ((The 1st American Volunteer Group))? That’s going to be noticed. It sounds to me like the biologists are seeing the latter and not the former, which is why they are voicing their concerns, rather loudly it seems.

Wildlife officials who witnessed the phenomena say many of the clouds of smoke were too big to come from anything but a bird, and they add that they saw “birds entering the solar flux and igniting, consequently become a streamer.”

I don’t know why, but the thought of this is making me giggle. Perhaps this is picturing Big Bird going into a screaming dive while gloriously aflame. Hey, Romney at least had the decency to make it quick.

Now, as you might expect, the Environmentalist Wackos are in full denial mode, just as they are over the Avian Cuisinart’s they are also building. The proposed plant is on a flight path for birds between the Colorado River and California’s largest lake, the Salton Sea — an area, experts say, is richer in avian life than the Ivanpah plant, with protected golden eagles and peregrine falcons and more than 100 other species of birds recorded there.

No problem, they can also open a restaurant on site.
