Last week the British went to the polls to elect a new government. The British Conservative Party, (Tories), won an absolute majority allowing David Cameron to form a government with no assistance from other parties. This is not what the polls were saying, right up to the end. The article continues on with various pollsters trying to come to grips with their complete and total collapse. They can&#8217;t understand what went wrong. You would think that after several elections in the United States that they missed by a country mile, not to mention the recent Israeli election, they would start looking at what they are doing wrong. Some are.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i>&#8220;The most obvious problem for all forecasters was that the polling average had Labour and the Conservatives even on the night before the election. This was not just the average of the polls; it was the consensus. Nearly every pollster\u2019s final poll placed the two parties within 1 percentage point of each other,&#8221;<a href=\"http:\/\/fivethirtyeight.com\/datalab\/what-we-got-wrong-in-our-2015-uk-general-election-model\/\" target=\"_blank\"> said Silver&#8217;s colleague, Ben Lauderdale, in a post explaining<\/a> what went wrong with their estimates.<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/angry.net\/blog2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/holes.png\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-15902\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/angry.net\/blog2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/holes-300x184.png?resize=300%2C184\" alt=\"holes\" width=\"300\" height=\"184\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/angry.net\/blog2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/holes.png?resize=300%2C184&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/angry.net\/blog2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/holes.png?w=363&amp;ssl=1 363w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The word in there is \u201cConsensus.\u201d There was one poll that was taken that hit the results right on the nose. I heard about it while listening to the <a href=\"http:\/\/howiecarrshow.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Howie Carr show<\/a> on my drive home from my Real World Job yesterday. (And this is why I can&#8217;t produce links. Radio in a car isn&#8217;t the internet) The polling firm couldn&#8217;t believe the results and consider it an \u201cOutlier,\u201d meaning that it was probably wrong. It went against the consensus that the Tories were going to get slaughtered at the polls.So, they didn&#8217;t release the results and now they have a number of eggs on their face.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2015\/may\/08\/polls-wrong-pre-election-results\" target=\"_blank\">The Guardian newspaper&#8217;s data editor, Alberto Nardelli, <\/a>admitted he lacked a sufficient explanation of what went wrong with the polling.<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/angry.net\/blog2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/snob_che_frame.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-16081\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/angry.net\/blog2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/snob_che_frame-215x300.jpg?resize=215%2C300\" alt=\"snob_che_frame\" width=\"215\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/angry.net\/blog2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/snob_che_frame.jpg?resize=215%2C300&amp;ssl=1 215w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/angry.net\/blog2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/snob_che_frame.jpg?w=268&amp;ssl=1 268w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 215px) 100vw, 215px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I can give you a hint. I know I have. In fact, I make a point of lying to pollsters on general principles, much like <a href=\"http:\/\/sluggy.wikia.com\/wiki\/Bun-Bun\" target=\"_blank\">Bun-bun<\/a> will go after telemarketers wherever and whenever he finds them. People are sick of polls and flat out don&#8217;t trust them. This is why polling companies keep getting blindsided. So, what do you think?
