It’s been a while since I’ve done a film review. I have seen a number of movies this year, the most recent one being Ant-Man. (A good movie btw) Last night I hit the opening of Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation.

As always, there may be spoilers in this review. If you or any of your movie going team see a spoiler and are upset by it, the reviewer will disavow all knowledge of your complaint.

Now that we have that out of the way, here’s what I thought. The movie was exciting, the writing seemed good, with mix of humor, seriousness and intrigue. By now you have seen the commercials of Tom Cruise’s character, Ethan Hunt, hanging off the door of a transport aircraft. That was not CGI, although I doubt it was Tom Cruise either. (He is nutty enough to try that of course)

One issue with this film is that once again they went with the “IMF Disavowed” plot line. I’m sorry, but as far as I’m concerned, they have gone to that plot well once to often, and frankly, it really wasn’t needed here. In this case, Hunt is captured, (Yet another tired plot line), and as he is escaping, the head of the CIA demands that the IMF be formally disbanded. (Alec Baldwin plays the head of the CIA and his character, much like he is in real life, is a complete jerk)

Hunt escapes with the help of a woman who is part of a group known as “The Syndicate.” Hunt has been tracking them for a year, but Baldwin’s character decrees it a fantasy. When Hunt calls in for extraction, he finds out that the IMF has been disbanded and that he has to come in. Instead, he goes dark and starts tracking the Syndicate. Baldwin orders Hunt to be taken, dead or alive. (Yet another plot line that has gotten a little long in the tooth)

Hunt soon figures out that the Syndicate is essentially the “Anti-IMF” with the same skills and resources, but lacking their moral compass. He tracks them all over the world, looking for someone he saw murder one of his contacts early in the movie. He also has dealing with the woman who helped him escape. This plot with her is actually interesting. You really don’t know who’s side she’s on until almost the end of the movie.

I’m not going to bother going into all the details, the betrayals, the double and triple crosses. I may want to put in a few spoilers, but not wreck the movie. I do recommend seeing Rogue Nation. It’s fun, doesn’t use to much CGI and is only slightly over the top. Even with the tired plot lines, I think you will enjoy it.

Thatisall

~The Angry Webmaster~

[yasr_visitor_votes size=”medium”]

As always, there may be spoilers in this review.
