Now that the vote is coming closer, the polls are showing that leaving the EU is growing in popularity. Here are some details from The Independent:

The campaign to take Britain out of the EU has opened up a remarkable 10-point lead over the Remain camp, according to an exclusive poll for The Independent. The survey of 2,000 people by ORB found that 55 per cent believe the UK should leave the EU (up four points since our last poll in April), while 45 per cent want it to remain (down four points). These figures are weighted to take account of people’s likelihood to vote. It is by far the biggest lead the Leave camp has enjoyed since ORB began polling the EU issue for The Independent a year ago, when it was Remain who enjoyed a 10-point lead. Now the tables have turned.

Since this is all happening in Europe, and traditionally, Americans don’t give a fig what happens over there, most people don’t have any idea what this is all about. Basically, the people running the European Union want to end all sovereignty of the member nations and rule directly over the people, The EU leadership is basically unelected and a bureaucrats wet dream. The British have been forced to do things that goes against centuries of law and tradition and they have had enough. This is a very simplistic explanation of course.

The results will heighten fears in the Remain campaign that it is losing ground among Labour supporters, who are seen as critical to securing victory for it. According to ORB, 56 per cent of people who voted for Labour at last year’s general election now back Remain when turnout is taken into account, but a dangerously high 44 per cent support Leave. Only 38 per cent of Tory voters endorse David Cameron’s stance by backing Remain, while 62 per cent support Leave.

British politics can be a bit confusing to Americans. The British use a parliamentarian system where the party leader is the Prime Minister. He or she can be removed by a simple vote of no confidence in Parliament and a new election has to be held to elect a new parliament. This differs from the American system where we elect our president and we’re pretty much stuck with him for 4 years.

Also, the two major parties, The Conservative Party, also known as the Tories, and the Labour Party, are not the same as the American Republican and Democrat parties. But a majority of both groups are still prepared to take the risk.

There is a lot of debate regarding the economics of pulling out of the EU. The Germans have been making outright threats against the British, which has been going over like a lead barrage balloon. There is also a question of just how beneficial being part of the EU has actually been for the British economy. There is a video explaining about that called Brexit, The Movie.

[youtuber youtube=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UTMxfAkxfQ0′]

The film is in favor of leaving the EU. It does make for some interesting points. One big point will be the the turmoil that will happen in British politics if Great Britain does pull out of the EU. There is a better than even chance that the current Prime Minister, David Cameron, will be booted out of office. If that happens, and considering all the infighting I’ve been reading about, it’s possible that former London Mayor, Boris Johnson might become the new head of the party and possibly Prime Minister. I don’t know what the status is on the Labour side, but from what little I know, Jeremy Corbyn is not all that secure in his position. There could be a nice internal fight there as well.

We shall see what happens in a couple of weeks.
