The criminal, (Since she has been duly convicted in a court of law), is the head of the International Monetary Fund, Christine Lagarde. She has been on trial in France for misusing public funds. Just prior to her conviction. Ms. Lagarde took off. Here are the details from Reuters<\/a>:<\/p>\n International Monetary Fund chief Christine Lagarde has left France for Washington and will not be present for the verdict in her negligence trial, her lawyer told Reuters.<\/b><\/p>\n The verdict was due later on Monday.<\/b><\/p>\n The trial relates to a case in which Lagarde, as French finance minister, approved a 400 million euro ($417 million) state payout to a business tycoon in 2008. She denies the negligence charges.<\/b><\/p>\n Now, unless I\u2019m mistaken, anyone else on trial for something like this would have been forced to hand over her passport and not allowed to leave France. However, she is one of the \u201cRuling Elite\u201d and we all know that the rules for everyone else do not apply to them.<\/p>\n The thing is, even though she was convicted, the judge decided no to do anything to her, so fleeing the jurisdiction, oh, I\u2019m sorry, traveling to Washington for IMF business, wasn\u2019t necessary. Here are some of the details on this aspect from the New York Times<\/a>:<\/p>\n Christine Lagarde, the managing director of the International Monetary Fund, was found guilty on Monday of criminal charges linked to the misuse of public funds during her time as France\u2019s finance minister, a verdict that could force her out of her post. <\/b><\/p>\n I smell a great big \u201cBUT\u201d here.<\/p>\n The judge hearing the case declined, however, to impose a fine or any jail time on Ms. Lagarde, who began her second five-year term at the I.M.F. in February. <\/b><\/p>\n The verdict was a surprise, after the prosecutor in the trial said last week that the case against her was \u201cvery weak<\/a>\u201d<\/a> and did not appear to be enough to win a conviction. <\/b><\/p>\n Like pretty much every American, I don\u2019t really understand how the French legal system works. Generally, prosecutors in the United States don\u2019t bring cases they aren\u2019t sure they can win, even though you could indict a baloney sandwich. When they do win, they generally like to throw the convicted into prison. I guess things are different in Europe. When someone is convicted of blowing $450 million Euros, you usually expect them to be looking at spending some time in the House with many Doors. (That would be prison)<\/p>\n It is a theme prosecutors have previously repeated, notably in calling in September 2015 for the case against Ms. Lagarde to be halted. But a special court, set up in 1993 to hear cases against France\u2019s politicians, overrode that recommendation. <\/b><\/p>\n Hmm, so the French were concerned that their prosecutors would try and broom the case? I wonder who they thought they were? James Comey? So what\u2019s next for the convicted criminal?<\/p>\n Ms. Lagarde\u2019s lawyers can appeal the verdict before France\u2019s highest court, the Cour de Cassation, on procedural grounds, but Mr. Maisonneuve suggested they might not, because she had not received any sentence. <\/b><\/p>\n I wouldn\u2019t bother either, unless this conviction actually had some ramifications, like being fired from my job as head of the IMF.<\/p>\n In a brief statement<\/a>, Gerry Rice, a spokesman for the Washington-based I.M.F., said the fund\u2019s executive board \u201chas met on previous occasions to consider developments related to the legal proceedings in France. It is expected that the board will meet again shortly to consider the most recent developments.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n In other words, \u201cOh Hell!
