Good day all. Last night, I saw the new movie in the Star Wars universe called \u201cSolo: A Star Wars Story. This is my review of that mess of a movie.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve been following the news of the production of this film off and on for a while. A lot of people were worried that it wasn\u2019t going to meet the level of the other films in the franchise. I\u2019m afraid, the fears are well justified.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

I\u2019m going to start with the first complaint. Director Ron Howard, who is normally an excellent film maker, if a complete Hollyweird Moonbat, must be kept as far away from the Star Wars franchise as is physically possible. Granted, he was brought in to clean up the mess made by Lucasfilm and the original directors. Still, he had a lot to work with and could have made a much more entertaining film.<\/p>\n

The basic plot of Solo is that it\u2019s an origin story of Han Solo, and it does, sort of, answer some of the questions in the second and third trilogies. (Going chronologically in the series, not when they were actually released)<\/p>\n

The problem is, the characters just don\u2019t grab the audience. In every other Star Wars film, the audience was actually involved. They would cheer, they would cry, and in the case of Jar Jar Binks, they would cringe. Here, there was…nothing. People didn\u2019t care enough to root for the good guys and boo the bad guys. We all just sat there and..watched.<\/p>\n

I read a review last week about this effect and how it didn\u2019t bode well for the film. As I understand it, Disney intends, or intended, Solo: A Star Wars Story to be the opening in a new film series. For this reason, they hired young actors and actresses who can stick around for 10-15 years and not age out of the role. I have a feeling that Disney is rethinking the whole \u201cNew series of Star Wars films\u201d idea.<\/p>\n

It isn\u2019t impossible to salvage the series, but it\u2019s going to take a lot of work, better writing and definitely, a new director. They\u2019re also going to have to revisit the entire idea that they laid out for the background plot. It just doesn\u2019t work. It has no bearing on the rest of the Star Wars universe. It felt like they were trying to create a universe not unlike the one inhabited by John Wick, one where criminals are in charge of everything.<\/p>\n

I won\u2019t call this film a bomb, more of a dud. I don\u2019t see buying this when it comes out on DVD. I also don\u2019t see it lasting to much longer in theaters. It will make money for Disney, but it just won\u2019t be the blockbuster they were hoping for. If they do continue the series, I hope they sit back and really work on character and plot development. They certainly have the effects well worked out.<\/p>\n
