Good day all. There has been tremendous historical tragedy in Rio de Janeiro overnight. No lives were lost, but an incalculable loss to the history of Mankind has occurred.<\/p>\n

There has been a fire in the 200 year old National Museum that has flat out gutted the building. The story is still ongoing, but the pictures pretty much say it all. Here are some of the details from The Guardian<\/b><\/a>:<\/p>\n

Brazil\u2019s oldest and most important historical and scientific museum has been consumed by fire, and much of its archive of 20 million items is believed to have been destroyed. The fire at Rio de Janeiro\u2019s 200-year-old National Museum began after it closed to the public on Sunday and raged into the night. There were no reports of injuries, but the loss to Brazilian science, history and culture was incalculable, two of its vice-directors said. <\/b><\/p>\n

\u201cIt was the biggest natural history museum in Latin America. We have invaluable collections. Collections that are over 100 years old,\u201d Cristiana Serejo, one of the museum\u2019s vice directors, told the G1 news site. <\/b><\/p>\n

First, we\u2019re all glad that no one was killed or injured. However, with something this important, why wasn\u2019t a state of the art fire prevention\/suppression system in place? Yes, those are expensive, but there are many rich progressive hypocrites<\/i><\/span> wealthy benefactors around the world who could have chipped in.<\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t immediately clear how the fire began. The museum was part of Rio\u2019s Federal University but had fallen into disrepair in recent years. Its impressive collections included items brought to Brazil by Dom Pedro I \u2013 the Portuguese prince regent who declared the then-colony\u2019s independence from Portugal \u2013 Egyptian and Greco-Roman artefacts, \u201cLuzia\u201d, a 12,000 year-old skeleton and the oldest in the Americas<\/a>, fossils, dinosaurs, and a meteorite found in 1784. Some of the archive was stored in another building but much of the collection is believed to have been destroyed. <\/b><\/p>\n

Ok, now I do see some politics here. Brazil has been having some issues of late, and I suspect that\u2019s why money wasn\u2019t set aside for maintenance and upgrades. Still, the curators and directors could have gone public and raised some funds. I\u2019m sure George Soros and Tom Steyer could have spared a few million from their ongoing spending to overthrow the United States Government. How about Bill Gates? He\u2019s sitting on billions and trying to figure out how to give it away.<\/p>\n

Brazil\u2019s president, Michel Temer, who has presided over cuts to science and education as part of a wider austerity drive, called the losses \u201cincalculable\u201d. \u201cToday is a tragic day for the museology of our country,\u201d he tweeted. \u201cTwo hundred years of work research and knowledge were lost.\u201d <\/b><\/p>\n

Nice going numbnuts. While I fully understand that cuts needed to be made, you should have looked into alternative sources of revenue for things like this museum. That\u2019s what leadership is.<\/p>\n

M\u00e9rcio Gomes, an anthropologist and former president of Brazil\u2019s indigenous agency, Funda\u00e7\u00e3o Nacional do \u00cdndio (FUNAI), compared the loss to the burning of the library of Alexandria in 48BC. \u201cWe Brazilians only have 500 years of history. Our National Museum was 200 years old, but that\u2019s what we had, and what is lost forever,\u201d he wrote on Facebook. \u201cWe have to reconstruct our National Museum.\u201d <\/b><\/p>\n

The bad news is the artifacts are pretty much gone. However, if the scholars were worth anything, they\u2019ve documented every single piece down to the subatomic level and stored that information off site. Hopefully, there are a gazillion pictures floating around the Internet that can be used to recreate what was lost.<\/p>\n

Duart also said that the museum had just closed a deal with the Brazilian government\u2019s development bank, BNDES, for funds that included a fire prevention project. \u201cThis is the most terrible irony,\u201d he said. <\/b><\/p>\n

Well, damn. That flat out sucks. From the pictures I\u2019ve seen, it looks like the building is a total loss. What needs to be done is a non-political fundraiser to rebuild the museum and restore as many artifacts as possible. Some, sadly, are gone forever. Others could be recreated if the materials and details of their creation exist. Yes, they won\u2019t be the originals, but they will be available and they will, I hope, have the original data for examination.<\/p>\n

The local fire department tried to put the fire out, but was stymied due to two dry fire hydrants. They had to bring in tankers and run hoses to a nearby lake, and that took time. From what I\u2019ve been reading, firefighter did go in and working with the museum staff, tried to save what they could. A tip of the hat to those people for doing the best they could with what they had available.<\/p>\n
