Neil Armstrong became the first man to walk on the moon when he stepped off the Lunar Module and said \u201cThat\u2019s one small step for man, One giant leap for Mankind.\u201d (Neil Armstrong accidentally dropped the \u201ca\u201d in what was supposed to be \u201cOne small step for A man) His copilot, Buzz Aldrin joined him soon and the two of them made history exploring the area and setting up scientific equipment, some of which is still in use today.<\/p>\n
The landing was a very near thing, with Armstrong manually piloting the Lunar Module. The computer that had been handling the descent was about to put them on a boulder which would have destroyed the lander and killed Armstrong and Aldrin. Armstrong overrode the computer and flew the Lunar Module to a safe landing, all the while with one finger on the abort button. The L.E.M touched down safely with 30 seconds of fuel remaining.<\/p>\n
Armstrong and Aldrin spent the better part of a day on the surface, then launched the second stage back into lunar orbit, rendezvoused with the Columbia and returned to earth safely. The entire world had been holding it\u2019s breath during this mission and the celebrations afterwards were massive. This was during the cold war and for a week, politics had been put aside.<\/p>\n

Neil Armstrong passed away in 2012. Buzz Aldrin has retired, and on occasion, deals with loudmouthed morons who claim the moon landings were faked. (Usually with a right cross to the cheers of people nearby) This was America at it\u2019s greatest.<\/p>\n
