Good day all, this is the Angry Systems Administrator. I\u2019ve been allowed out of the data center to update you on the latest technology I\u2019ve recently procured for the Moronic Meathead<\/em><\/del> Angry Webmaster.<\/p>\n

We have a few obsolete items that needed to be replaced. First, we purchased a new 4K amazon Firestick<\/b><\/a> for the Webmaster\u2019s secondary entertainment center. The original one was 4 years old and only did HD. I set it up for him and it worked great…for one day.<\/p>\n

The problem wasn\u2019t the firestick. I found that that the Dish streaming service also wasn\u2019t working correctly. (Netflix) We could watch the standard satellite feed, but the extra services weren\u2019t working correctly. I traced this back to the 13 year old TV set the Webmaster had. It appears the HDMI circuits finally started giving up the ghost.<\/p>\n

Granted, the Angry Webmaster is a damn cheap bastard, but even he understands that it wasn\u2019t worth fixing and sent me out for a new television. I picked up a nice Samsung 50 inch 4K set<\/b> and hooked everything into it. Not only did the Firestick begin working, (along with the Dish streaming), it started working in glorious 4K…Mostly.<\/p>\n

This brought up another issue, the WiFi router. This was also another antique and only worked in the 2.4Ghz range. For a decent 4K image, the TV feels the need for speed, (To quote Top Gun), and I went shopping for a new WiFi router. The one I selected is the TP-Link AC1750 Smart WiFi Router<\/b><\/a>. This is a duel band router with some major upgrades over the old Netgear router we used to have. (Now in the cabinet of ancient tech)<\/p>\n

I\u2019m still tweaking out the settings and security on everything, (Remember, when you get a new router, CHANGE THE DEFAULT PASSWORD FIRST THING!!!!!), but to date we\u2019re all very happy with the new equipment. What I\u2019m not happy with is Comcast. (But then who is?)<\/p>\n

Currently, we\u2019re paying just under $100\/month for internet access. We don\u2019t use their TV services, but thanks to Comcast\u2019s monopoly, we don\u2019t have any choice in the matter. We\u2019re also getting just 65Mbps download speeds max, and usually less.<\/p>\n

Reviewing the Comcast, (Now known as Xfinity, but changing the name won\u2019t help. They\u2019re still Comcrap), account information, we can upgrade to 250Mbps for about a dollar. However, that contract is good for only 2 years, and without a doubt, they will jack it up to a gazillion dollars a month. (If there ever was a company suitable for braking up, it\u2019s Comcast. Break it into infrastructure and media. Infrastructure handles internet and can sell to anyone who wants to connect, even competitors of Comcrap)<\/p>\n

We\u2019ll have to run the numbers and find out how badly we\u2019ll get hit once the contract runs out. Sadly there is no other real alternative in the area. (Monopoly don\u2019t you know) It might be worth upgrading the internet access. Of course, there is the other little game Comcrap plays, download limits. Faster speeds you hit the limits sooner and they hit you with more charges. Oh well, we\u2019re totally screwed no matter what we do.<\/p>\n
