An asteroid whizzed past the Earth at 15 miles per second, and no one saw it until the last second.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/i.pinimg.com\/originals\/a5\/8c\/6a\/a58c6ab67eed8952dacf361a9effdffe.jpg?resize=320%2C240&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"320\" height=\"240\" \/><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>This asteroid was not as big as the one that wiped out the dinosaurs, but it was large enough to destroy a city. Here are the details <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210422035007\/https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/science\/surprise-city-killer-asteroid-almost-hit-earth-whizzing-by-at-15-miles-a-second\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>from Fox News<\/b><\/a>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><b>A \u201ccity-killer\u201d asteroid whizzed by Earth on Thursday, startling astronomers who didn\u2019t pick up the rock\u2019s trajectory until days before it passed the planet, according to a report. <\/b><b>The rock, dubbed Asteroid 2019 OK, passed within 43,500 miles of Earth traveling at a speed of 15 miles a second, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/national\/earth-had-a-near-miss-with-city-killer-asteroid-this-morning-20190725-p52apn.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the Sydney Morning Herald first reported.<\/a> <\/b><\/p>\n<p>Now a little perspective. We have satellites in orbit that are further out then that. 43,500 miles would be like having a beer can on your head and having someone shoot it off. That is very close. It wouldn\u2019t have taken much to shift it slightly and then WHAMMO!!<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><b>The asteroid, which was estimated to be between 187 feet and 427 feet in diameter, was discovered this week, (July 29<sup>th<\/sup>) by two astronomy teams in Brazil and the US \u2014 and confirmed by NASA\u2019s Jet Propulsion Lab. It\u2019s the largest rock to pass by Earth this year \u2014 and possibly even this decade. <\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">\u201c<b>This is one of the closest approaches to Earth by an asteroid that we know of. And it\u2019s a pretty large one,\u201d Michael Brown, an associate professor at Monash University\u2019s school of physics and astronomy told the paper. <\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">\u201c<b>It\u2019s impressively close. I don\u2019t think it\u2019s quite sunk in yet. It\u2019s a pretty big deal.\u201d <\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/angry.net\/blog2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/captain_obvious.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-17187\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/angry.net\/blog2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/captain_obvious-300x182.jpg?resize=300%2C182\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"182\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/angry.net\/blog2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/captain_obvious.jpg?resize=300%2C182&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/angry.net\/blog2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/captain_obvious.jpg?w=370&amp;ssl=1 370w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Gee, ya think?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><b>While the rock\u2019s size may seem small \u2014 roughly the length of a football field \u2014 experts said the impact from Asteroid 2019 OK would have disastrous. <\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><b>It would have hit with over 30 times the energy of the atomic blast at Hiroshima,\u201d Alan Duffy, a Swinburne University astronomy, told the paper. <\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">\u201c<b>It\u2019s a city-killer asteroid. But because it\u2019s so small, it\u2019s incredibly hard to see until right at the last minute.\u201d <\/b><\/p>\n<p>And it would, if it impacted the ground instead of exploding in mid-air, dug a hole probably similar in size to the one in Arizona.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/angry.net\/blog2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Facebook-stock-value.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-7789\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/angry.net\/blog2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Facebook-stock-value-300x199.jpg?resize=300%2C199\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/angry.net\/blog2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Facebook-stock-value.jpg?resize=300%2C199&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/angry.net\/blog2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Facebook-stock-value.jpg?resize=150%2C99&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/angry.net\/blog2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Facebook-stock-value.jpg?resize=400%2C266&amp;ssl=1 400w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/angry.net\/blog2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Facebook-stock-value.jpg?w=800&amp;ssl=1 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If it had come in, and exploded in the air, it would have had a similar effect to the one that detonated <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tunguska_event\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">over Tunguska in 1908<\/a>.That one is actually estimated to be smaller then the one that just went past. In 1908, there was no one in the area, so there were no known casualties. A few years ago, another meteor came in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chelyabinsk_meteor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">over <span lang=\"en-US\">Chelyabinsk, <\/span><\/a><span lang=\"en-US\">Russia that detonated and caused some injuries and damage. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">Sadly though, this one missed. I can think of a number of cities that could be greatly improved by a visit form the Sweet Meteor Of Death. San Francisco, Seattle, New York City, just to name a few. Eventually, it will happen.
