I’ve been a bit busy today. I have been setting up a new PC that is replacing the 11 year old model I’ve been working on for…11 years. I can say that the experience reminds me why I don’t miss my days doing desktop support.

I did some online shopping of course, and took a look at both Dell and HP. I didn’t waste my time with Lenovo, since I don’t particularity care to have the People’s Republic of China accessing my system with built in malware. After some comparisons, I went with the HP. The reason was simple. It allowed me to configure the hardware the way I wanted. Dell used to do that, but these days, not so much it seems.

I ordered the system in May and it finally arrived about a week ago. I also ordered a new monitor to go with it. The old one I have is, well antiquated. I’ve spent the last week setting it up, installing my preferred applications, removing the HP and Microsoft crap I don’t care about and transferring nearly a terabyte of data. I have backup devices of course, moving them around was just to much of a pain.

So now it’s up and running and in place, My reaction? WOW! The difference in responsiveness is noticeable. Part of that is the new processor of course, but the 16GB of RAM I ordered is far better then the 6GB I had in the original system. Also, there was some sort of memory fault in the old system. It was not uncommon for it to crash, and running my usual applications, usually when I was doing something important.

One of the things I miss was playing music. I have a nice set of speakers, but I couldn’t go more then 15 minutes before the dreaded Blue Screen Of Death appeared, usually indicating some sort of memory problem. (Probably a bad RAM chip) I am looking forward to trying some of my streaming services to see how they perform on this new 24″ monitor.

Obviously, I’m going to be tweaking this out for a while. I’m also digging through my software library to see what I should put on and should forget about. The list of “Forget this!” is rather large. Do I really need multiple copies of Windows for workgroups, windows 95, windows 98, Windows NT 4 workstation and Server? I don’t think I’m going to be using Exchange 5.5 anytime soon. Yep, it looks like it’s time to do some serious house cleaning.

Speaking of cleaning, when I pulled the old tower out, I looked at the space and went EEEYUUUCK!! 20 minutes with a vacuum cleaner fixed that reaction, which will mach the Angry SWMBO happy. Yeah, like most men, I have a far higher tolerance for sloth then most women, but when I find more dust then is in the Mojave desert? yeah it’s time to do a little cleaning.

All in all, I’m satisfied. It cost me a good $1400 for the system and monitor, but it was time to bite the bullet, and so far, so good. Considering that I’ve been working from home since March, and it looks like I may be forced to continue to do so for a few more months yet, I think this system will help my productivity immensely. (Use, I have a company provided laptop, and I do use it, but it is a laptop) And now to go play with some fireworks

Thatisall

(1 votes, average: 5.00 out of 5)
Loading...

~The Angry Webmaster~

Good day all.
