A promise from the president to give up his\u00a0nuclear capabilities as commander in chief could take the same power away from future presidents. <\/b><\/p>\n “Vesting one person with this authority entails real risks,”\u00a0the letter<\/a>\u00a0from\u00a0Rep.\u00a0Jimmy Panetta, D-Calif., and obtained by Politico reads. “Past presidents have threatened to attack other countries with nuclear weapons or exhibited behavior that caused other officials to express concern about the president\u2019s judgment.”<\/b><\/p>\n First, it is surprisingly difficult for a president to initiate a nuclear first strike, especially if there is no real threat currently facing the United States. Even in the old Soviet Union, which considered nuclear weapons to be no different from standard weapons, launching them took more then the leader issuing the order, at least since Stalin died.<\/p>\n There have been incidents where a president made it known that the use of nuclear weapons was on the table, however, this was usually to prevent a war. Every president is briefed on the SIOP, (Single Integrated Operations Plan), and there is an officer who carries a case with the codes and communications tools needed to launch a nuclear strike.
