Hello, this is the Angry Systems Administrator. For close to 10 years now, Anger Central has used LastPass as it\u2019s password manager. We even purchased the premium version so we could use it across different devices and platforms.<\/p>\n

Recently, I\u2019ve noticed a serious degradation in the functionality of LastPass. This seems to be tying in with their plans to force more users to pay for their services. Since we already are paying for the service, we shouldn\u2019t have been affected, but it seems we were.<\/p>\n

To begin with, Lastpass was constantly having trouble connecting to the Central Servers. Recently, they announced that they were going to discontinue certain services that were provided for free, and roll those services into their premium plans. Finally, the costs seem to be going up.<\/p>\n

A week ago I started seeing news items from various tech sites also commenting on LastPass and how it\u2019s been going downhill since the recent sale to a private equity firm. They also provided a list of alternatives, a few of which I have been investigating. <\/span>I finally settled on <\/span>Bitwarden<\/b><\/span><\/a>. <\/span>It does pretty much what LastPass does and they haven\u2019t neutered it they way Lastpass has been \u201c<\/span>F<\/span>ixed.\u201d <\/span>(In case the owners of LastPass didn\u2019t know, this is not a cat or dog)<\/span><\/p>\n

It also has a premium version and it\u2019s significantly cheaper then LastPass. I was so impressed, that I dropped $10 on a one year subscription. There is a bit of a learning curve of course, but it hasn\u2019t been all that steep. It\u2019s mostly just getting things configured. One nice thing about it, they make it very easy to import your LastPass passwords. Simply export them from LastPass and then import the .csv file.<\/p>\n

There are some quirks I\u2019m seeing. Out of the box, it requires you to use your master password to access the local database. This is obviously a security feature and I\u2019m not opposed to it. The issue is that I have an extremely long and complex password and reentering it is annoying. I have found a way to adjust things so I don\u2019t need to do it as often as I wanted.<\/p>\n

All in all, I am satisfied with Bitwarden and I suggest that you take a look at it. With LastPass basically basically \u201cJumping the shark,\u201d it\u2019s time to move on. This isn\u2019t the first application I\u2019ve had to abandon, and I doubt it will be the last. Fare thee well LastPass. Don’t let the doorknob hit you on the way out.<\/p>\n
