Good day all. Soccer is the most popular sport in the world, with one very large exception. That would be the United States. Most Americans really don\u2019t care about soccer, or football as it\u2019s know everywhere else. (We play real football in the US of A) The United States does have a Men\u2019s and Women\u2019s soccer team, and this is where the fun begins.<\/p>\n

It seems that the women\u2019s team isn\u2019t making as much as the men\u2019s team. From what I\u2019ve read, it\u2019s actually a complicated issue. However, the Progressive Liberal Idiots, looking to make political points have decided to threaten funding for the 2026 World Cup. Here are some of the details from The Hill<\/b><\/a>:<\/p>\n

A group of Senate Democrats introduced a bill Wednesday that\u00a0intends to block funding for the 2026 World Cup unless the U.S. women\u2019s national soccer team receives equal pay. <\/b><\/p>\n

The bill<\/a>, dubbed the Give Our Athletes Level Salaries (GOALS) Act, calls for prohibiting \u201cthe use of funds for the 2026 World Cup unless the United States Soccer Federation provides equitable pay to the members of the United States Women\u2019s National Team and the United States Men\u2019s National Team.\u201d <\/b><\/p>\n

Apparently, there was a story in the Washington Compost<\/a> that announced that the women players were only making 89% of what the men were. I\u2019ve been hearing about this on occasion when I can\u2019t avoid it. (My lack of interest is complete) As I recall, the pay is tied to a few things like profits and receipts and other things and the women\u2019s team isn\u2019t drawing watchers at the level of the men\u2019s team. I may be mistaken of course, since I can\u2019t be bothered to actually find out.<\/p>\n

The push for equal pay for the national women’s team was first sparked after the team secured its fourth World Cup victory in 2019. Following the win, team co-captain Megan Rapinoe said “it’s time for action” to secure equal pay for her and her female teammates. <\/b><\/p>\n

I do believe I\u2019ve heard of this individual. As I recall, she\u2019s just another whining leftist who thinks the world owes her something. Meanwhile, the bill was introduced in the House, (Of Idiots), regarding this.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0legislation\u00a0passed through the House in April<\/a>, 217-210, but was blocked by\u00a0<\/a>Senate Republicans on Tuesday<\/a>. Lawmakers voted 49-50 in an attempt to advance the bill, falling short of the 60 votes needed to overcome the legislative filibuster.<\/b><\/p>\n

I\u2019m assuming that the GOP blocked it in the Senate as unwarranted interference in private business. I don\u2019t know if the two teams are owned by the same owners or not. (And don\u2019t care) This led Manchin of West Virginia to put a bill in to stop founding the world cup unless the demands of the Women\u2019s team are met.<\/p>\n

Sen. Joe Manchin<\/a> (D-W.Va.), who introduced the GOALS Act along with Sen. Maria Cantwell<\/a> (D-Wash.), noted that while federal funds are not directly allocated to U.S. soccer, there are a number of other ways the organization and its affiliates,\u00a0including FIFA and CONCACAF, will likely use federal funds for the World Cup. <\/b><\/p>\n

The senators\u00a0said\u00a0that if the bill is enacted and the women’s team is not given equal pay, funds provided to host cities, participating local and state organizations, the U.S. Soccer Federation, CONCACAF and FIFA will be blocked. <\/b><\/p>\n

My question is simple. Why the Hell are we spending any money on the World Cup in the first place? I don\u2019t care about it, and with few exceptions, no one I know really cares about it. Those exceptions? They\u2019re legal immigrants from countries that might go to war with each other over the outcome of one of these games.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe American athletes representing our country on the worldwide stage must be compensated equally \u2014 because a gold medal is a gold medal and a World Cup is a World Cup, no matter your gender,\u201d Cantwell said in a statement. <\/b><\/p>\n

\u201cThe U.S. Women\u2019s National Soccer team elevated this issue into the national conversation, but it impacts top athletes in every sport. Let\u2019s start to right this wrong and get this done this Congress,\u201d she added. <\/b><\/p>\n

Do you know what this sounds like to me? The players need to hire better agents. The players did file suit against the U.S. Soccer Federation, with a whole list of complaints, not just pay. The case didn\u2019t go in their favor.<\/p>\n

A federal judge, however, ruled last May that the team did not have enough evidence to bring to trial<\/a> its claims that its players are receiving unequal pay. <\/b><\/p>\n

And what was the reasoning for the Judge\u2019s dismissal of the case?<\/p>\n

“In sum, [US Soccer] has offered evidence in support of its Motion for Summary Judgment that the [women’s national team] has been paid more on both a cumulative and an average per-game basis than the [men’s national team] over the class period,” Klausner ruled, adding that the evidence presented is “insufficient to create a genuine issue of material fact for trial.” <\/b><\/p>\n

If I understand this, and I\u2019ll let those who like to read legal decisions, the per average pay the women were getting was actually greater then what the mean were getting. I\u2019m guessing it means that the women\u2019s team isn\u2019t playing the same number of games as the men. Now why would that be? It could be that no one wants to watch them.<\/p>\n

However, I can get on board with not spending taxpayer money on the World Cup. I\u2019m opposed to spending any money on any professional sports other then traffic control and police. (And those can be paid police details, with the teams paying for the police out of their own funds) So, go ahead and pass it. Either the league pays them more, (and shows that the women players need the help of Big Daddy Government), or they don\u2019t and we won\u2019t be spending money on something few American care about.<\/p>\n
