There is an old saying, “In God We Trust, all others pay cash.” For the entire history of the United States, and to some extent, the world, currency has been used to pay for goods and services. Some of that currency may have been paper, other forms were coins, including those made of silver and gold.

When credit cards started to be issued, many places didn’t accept them. Now we are beginning to see businesses refuse to take cash and demand electronic payments.

There are a number of reasons for this of course. One is security. Having a large amount of cash on you or in your location makes you a target for criminals. Another reason is the documentation needed thanks to the Federal Government. (Did you know that any cash transaction over $10,000 requires a form to be filled out for the government?) For this reason a growing number of business won’t take case. Now there is a bill in congress to tell businesses that unless there is a valid reason, you will accept legal tender as payment. Here are the details from Fox Business News:

Sens. John Fetterman, D-Pa., and Kevin Cramer, R-N.D., have introduced a bill that would generally require those conducting in-person business to accept cash as payment from customers.

“Any person engaged in the business of selling or offering goods or services at retail to the public who accepts in-person payments at a physical location … shall accept cash as a form of payment for sales made at such physical location in amounts up to and including $500 per transaction,” the measure stipulates, in part.

The proposal provides an exception if there is “a device that converts cash into prepaid cards” without any fee.

This will certainly make SWMBO happy. (It’s transcribed from Reddit apparently) One was a store attendant who had someone come in and buy a couple of things and then try and pay with a $100 bill. The store had just opened and this would have cleaned out his change drawer so he had to refuse the sale. (Remember, always carry small bills)

“It’s simple: if you’re open for business in America, you should take U.S. dollars,” Fetterman said, according to press releases. “I’m proud to introduce the bipartisan Payment Choice Act with Senator Cramer because every American should be able to use paper currency if they choose. We have millions of people in this country who don’t have access to bank accounts, and they must be able to go shopping with their hard-earned dollars.”

Once again, Fetterman ends up crossing the aisle and working with a Republican on a basically good idea. Is it any wonder the Democrats want him out of the Senate? I don’t expect a lot of Democrats to go for this bill. They’ve been pushing for a cashless society for a while now. It gives them another avenue of control of the serfs. They saw how Castro’s Bastard, Justin Trudeau, basically shut down and confiscated the funds from anyone who opposed him. This idea was expanded on by Kurt Schlichter’s new book, American Apocalypse.

Businesses would not be required to accept large bill denominations.

That generally means $100 bills. I’m going to assume that if someone is actually buying $100+ of stuff, that won’t be a real issue.

The proposal declares that “for the 5-year period beginning on the date of enactment of this section, this section shall not require a person to accept cash payments in $50 bills or any larger bill.”

“The Secretary shall issue a rule on the date that is 5 years after the date of the enactment of this section with respect to any bill denominations a person is not required to accept,” the text of the measure reads. “When issuing a rule under subparagraph (A), the Secretary shall require persons to accept $1, $5, $10 and $20 bills.”

Since most people generally don’t carry more than $20’s, this won’t be an issue. Of course, large bills do have the advantage, when taking them to the bank, of not having a lot of bulk.

“Cash is still legal tender in the United States, despite some businesses’ exclusive acceptance of electronic payments,” Cramer said, according to the press releases. “Forcing the use of credit and debit cards or imposing premium prices on goods and services paid for with cash limits consumer choice. Americans should have the option of using cards or cash, but they should be the ones who make that choice.”

And that is what will set off the Democrats. How dare Fetterman work with the Republicans to allow the serfs and peons a choice in anything? After all, they are just ignorant masses yearning to be told what to do and how to do it by their betters.

Honestly, this is a great idea especially with how the Democrats started mandating that credit card companies start tracking gun and ammo purchases as separate code items. (One of the things that the credit card companies and banks do is set up certain codes for vendors to track items sold. Sometimes it’s generic, like shirts or clothes. If you look at a bill, it says that it’s legal tender for all debts. When computer systems and networks go down, and they do, people who may prefer to use cards can fall back to cash.
