Part of that was to cover the costs associated with processing the renunciation, and part of it was to try and make people think about what they were doing. Now the State Department has decided that if you want to go, fine. The United States government has lowered the fee to just $450 dollars. Here are the details from Fox News<\/b><\/a>:<\/p>\n The State Department<\/a> has cut the fee Americans must pay to renounce their U.S. citizenship by roughly 80%, lowering the cost from $2,350 to $450 under a new rule that took effect Friday. <\/b>The new fee, first announced in 2023 but not previously implemented, returns the cost to the same level the government charged when it first began requiring payment for citizenship renunciations in 2010.<\/b><\/p>\n The State Department said in the rule<\/a> that it lowered the fee as a policy decision to reduce the cost burden on people seeking a Certificate of Loss of Nationality, the document issued after someone formally renounces U.S. citizenship before a diplomatic or consular officer abroad.<\/b><\/p>\n I don\u2019t have any intention of giving up my citizenship, but I am curious on why it costs so much? When they do get the visas, they find out that a lot of things they used to be able to do are no longer allowed.<\/p>\n Renouncing U.S. citizenship<\/a> involves a multistep process that requires applicants to appear before a U.S. consular officer abroad and confirm in writing and verbally that they understand the consequences before taking a formal oath of renunciation, The Associated Press reported. The State Department must then review and approve the request before issuing a Certificate of Loss of Nationality.<\/b><\/p>\n The reason for all the hassle is that they want people to consider what they are doing. They are providing many chances for someone to change their minds. They also want to make sure that the person renouncing his or her citizenship has already secured citizenship in another country and fully understands the repercussions. I\u2019ve read stories where some idiots went through the process and then discovered that they were now stateless people because they hadn\u2019t gotten citizenship somewhere else.<\/p>\n Frankly, if someone wants to pull the plug, let them. There are plenty of people who want to come here and eventually become American citizens. There are those who were born here, (Anchor babies), but have spent most or all of their lives outside of the United States. They feel no connection and for them, renouncing their citizenship is no big deal.
