Good evening. By now you are aware that Steve Jobs, former CEO of Apple died after a battle with cancer yesterday. He was 56 years old.<\/p>\n

Now, I’m not going to sit here and blubber over what a terrible loss this is. I will offer my condolences to his family and friends on a personal level.<\/p>\n

However, professionally, I never understood the drooling hordes of admirers of his overpriced, underpowered, locked down hardware. I do not own any apple products and have no plans to get any.<\/p>\n

When I went in search of a new cell phone a while back, the Iphone had just arrived. I wanted to move from Verizon to AT&T for personal reasons and when I went into the AT&T store, a clerk asked me if she could help. I told her I wanted a new phone but I DIDN’T want an Iphone.\u00a0The look of relief in her eyes was palpable.<\/p>\n

I have looked at the Ipad and found it wanting. I don’t have a need for one and I consider it to expensive for what it does. I have very\u00a0sensitive\u00a0hearing and don’t like earbuds, so no Ipod. My current phone plays .mp3’s just fine if I want to burn the battery down. And I can replace the battery if I need to.<\/p>\n

Steve Jobs has been acclaimed a genius. What he was, was good at marketing. He was also a massive control freak. You either went with his ideas or you got nothing. The results of this was a lack of choice or of freedom in your Apple hardware.<\/p>\n

I’ve had to use Apple computers and found the experience tiring. I’ve heard from “Apple Fanboys & girls” that Macs were immune to viruses that rampaged through windows systems.<\/p>\n

Steve Jobs appears to have believed that load of\u00a0baloney. Over the last 12 years, Microsoft and the various flavors of Linux have been locking\u00a0themselves\u00a0down tight, developing antivirus solutions and making themselves more secure. Apple under Steve Jobs apparently didn’t heed the lessons.<\/p>\n

Of late, viruses and trojans are now\u00a0appearing\u00a0aimed\u00a0straight\u00a0at the Mac. Apple users are now finding out what people using Windows have known for years. Take care to protect your systems or lose your data.<\/p>\n

Another problem with the locked down systems of Apple is\u00a0flexibility. I can do far more with a PC then I was ever able to do with a Mac. I also do not choose to pay 3 times the price for a system that isn’t as capable.<\/p>\n

When Steve Jobs returned to Apple, one of the first things he did was kill the Apple clone business. There were several companies paying licensing fees to Apple and selling the systems for less than Apple did. (One of the reasons Apple almost went under)<\/p>\n

While this might have been good from a business point of view, I think it was terrible from a developmental point of view. I’m not going to bother with all the law suits Apple has filed against anyone who even thinks about improving Apple systems to make them more usable.<\/p>\n

No, Jobs would have none of that. He wanted everything to be the way he wanted it. He would decide what people should have. He was a genius at designing interfaces. He would fret of the shades of the colors used for the icons. He would make things perfect, and everyone would worship him.<\/p>\n

You would not need to make choices, Steve Jobs would choose for you. Apple has come quite a ways since the introduction of the Macintosh.<\/p>\n

Amazing what changed happen in 26 years. Now, Google is considered to be the voice of freedom and choice ((Anger Central’s feelings about Google are already well, and loudly known)). Apple? They are more like the\u00a0control\u00a0controlling authority of Orwell’s\u00a0imagination<\/p>\n

Steve Jobs was also notorious for\u00a0controlling\u00a0media access. if a tech reporter wrote something he didn’t like, you were banned from any future Apple events. It didn’t matter if you were the biggest Apple fan around.<\/p>\n

He attended some Apple event with Steve Jobs, and when Jobs started speaking, Leo turned his Apple Laptop around and used the built in camera to stream the video. He though this was ok since there were other cameras broadcasting the event.<\/p>\n

Well, apparently, Steve Jobs felt differently and Leo has never been invited to another event since that day. The funny thing is, Leo has stated that if someone had asked him to stop streaming, he would have.<\/p>\n

No, I will not mourn the passing of Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple. I will mourn the passing of a man who died to young and of a terrible\u00a0disease.<\/p>\n
