Good day all. This is the Angry Systems Administrator, angrier than usual. Last week there were updates to Mozilla Firefox and Adobe Flash. There was just one problem. Flash started crashing Firefox.<\/p>\n

Not only that, but I had it take down a couple computers with hard BSOD\u2019s ((Blue Screen Of Death<\/a>)). I finally found out what the frack was happening when I saw an article on the Heise Security Report<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The latest release of the Flash Player plugin, version 11.3, is causing frequent crashes in Firefox13 on Windows. The problem seems to be related to the recently introduced Protection Mode<\/a>, which is supposed to make the plugin run in a sandbox to isolate it from the rest of the system. The number of users experiencing this problem is now so large that Mozilla and Adobe are both offering differing solutions for a fix.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Oh joy. Now Anger Central does use Flash, but not the Flash player. Here are some of the things happening and some recommendations.<\/p>\n

Many of the crashes appear to be the result of interactions between Flash Player and other plugins, particularly plugins which offer the ability to record Flash video streams. Mozilla specifically mentions a Firefox extension called RealPlayer Browser Record and recommends deactivating this plugin. The Firefox developers have also added this plugin to its blacklist which comprises add-ons known to be insecure or unstable. Firefox automatically disables extensions on this list, but allows users to reactivate them manually.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

We don\u2019t use Real Player or any of the recorders Mozilla mentioned. However I have disabled the Flash player plugin until a fix is forthcoming. I do see issues when I visit a few sites, however, if there is something I want to see that requires Flash I use Google Chrome or Internet Exploder.<\/p>\n
