Good day all, this is the Angry Systems Administrator. Once again, that complete and utter wingnut, the Angry Systems Administrator, is demanding a new mobile phone. It seems he is tired of the one I selected for him a few years ago.
As you may recall, I asked for some advice on what to get the whiny little weasel. Unlike the last phone, this one will be a smartphone. I will also be moving the spoiled little crybaby off the AT&T network and onto the Sprint network. I won’t be using Sprint though. I’ve located a company called Ting.com
I first heard about Ting from Leo LaPort on This Week in Tech. (Or one of his other podcasts) I’ve been keeping it in mind for some time now. From what I can see, the services will either be about the same costs even with Data as The Angry Idiot’s current bill. One issue is that Sprint is not a GSM network. This limits the Angry Webmaster if he should travel to China, but he can just turn the phone off and not talk to anyone. (That should make Mrs. Webmaster happy)
Another advantage of Ting is that they don’t force you into a contract like AT&T, Verizon or T-Mobile. Yes, they also have no contract services, but they aren’t that much better price wise then the current contract services and the phones are limited. You can also fogo things like data or text messaging if you want.
Speaking of phones, I dove into the petty cash fund and splurged. Since this is a no contract service, you get to pay full price for a phone and I did. I ordered a Samsung Galaxy III with 32gb of memory on board. The Angry book keeper is going to throw a fit no doubt at the $579 price tag, but hey, how often do we buy new mobile phones? He will like the lower costs for the plan though. I’m guestimating that we will save $20/month over AT&T’s current rate. (Basic calling and unlimited texting)
The phone should get here in a week or so and then I’ll activate it. The Angry Blowhard will be using two phones for a while as we determine if the new service fits his needs. If it does, I’ll arrange to have his current number ported over. He has a google voice account in any case which he uses for business matters.
If he decides the phone isn’t for him and doesn’t like the service, I’ll cancel the service and sell the phone. I should be able to get most of the cost back, but I don’t expect that to be a problem. Realistically, the only problem I see is the size of this thing. I’ll need to find a holster for him so he can haul it around. Oh well, off to Amazon for that!
Thank you
~The Angry Systems Administrator~
