John Ford’s The Battle of Midway

Between June 4th 1942 and June 7th 1942 the most important naval battle of WW2 was fought near Midway Atoll. Director John Ford, best known for directing John Wayne in many westerns, was on the Atoll filming a documentary for the navy.

Recently the footage was restored and is now available on YouTube. The film captures some of the drama of what happened there, but was “sanitized” for public viewing. There is almost no mention of the casualties we took or the loss of the USS Yorktown. The film is designed to show the home front how “Their boys” were doing and demonize the enemy.

There is none of the politically correct pussyfooting we have these days, nor the flat out treason put out by Hollywood today. It’s doubtful that any of today’s film makers would put themselves in harms way as John Ford did. He paid the price for the footage you’re going to see. He was wounded during the Japanese air raid filming the battle shown below.

Watch and marvel, and consider how we handle our enemies today.

Granted, this is a propaganda film and is designed to boost the morale of the people in the States. Still, the footage gives a glimpse how fierce the battle was.

Unfortunately it doesn’t mention the losses we took. Torpedo 8, was wiped out with only one survivor. The USS Yorktown was blasted by repeated bomb hits and still almost made it. The Yorktown was finally sunk by a Japanese submarine that managed to slip inside the screen of escorts.

These brave men fought so that we would remain a free and prosperous nation. Pity that certain people who have benefited from this have nothing good to say about the United States. To them I say, “Feel free to LEAVE any time Jerks!”

That is all.
