Good day all. It’s been a few months since I did a movie review and this week I’ve seen two. The first one is Thor: The Dark World. I’ll review the second one later.
I didn’t see Thor in my favorite theater, Chunky’s. I was with the Angry Brother In-Law and he wanted to see it in 3D and on an IMAX screen. I’ve made note in the past of my dislike for 3D movies and Thor was no exception. This has nothing to do with the movie, only 3D. I detest wearing the glasses since I wear glasses already, so I have to put a second pair on top of the first.
As to the IMAX theater, I was not impressed with that either. The last time I saw an IMAX film was shortly after they began making them. As I recall, it had something to do with ice and penguins. I also recall that it was actually a better film, effects wise. By this, I mean that it was down with actual IMAX cameras and I don’t think that was what they filmed Thor: The Dark World in.
Now to the actual film. As always, I will provide spoilers, so if you don’t want to know what happens, bail out now. Still here? Ok, you were warned. Thor: The Dark World takes place shortly after The Avengers. Thor has taken Loki back to Asgard, who is now cooling his heels in prison. Thor is moving around the various worlds fighting to restore order. The historical back story of the Asgardian realm introduces the Dark Elves. They were a race that existed prior to the current universe, and that universe was dark. There was no light. That universe eventually died away but the Dark Elves continued on, working to restore their dark universe. Long before Thor, the Asgardians fought, defeated and annihilated the Dark Elves with the exception of their leader and a few others who escaped and went into hiding. The Asgardians went after the Dark Elves because of a substance called the Aether that will destroy the universe. With the defeat of the Elves, Bor, who was the king, hide the Aether since they are unable to destroy it.
We move to the current day. Thor, as mentioned, was out crushing enemies and bringing order. His human girlfriend, Jane Foster, is in a funk. For her, it’s been two years since she saw Thor. He wasn’t able to contact her during the Battle of New York and had to get Loki back to Asgard.
Currently, Jane is in London on a date she really isn’t interested in being on when her intern, Darcy, shows up with some interesting readings. She finally goes with Darcy and discover an abandoned factory where the laws of physics are a little weird. As Jane is exploring, she is dragged through a portal and discovers the container holding the Aether. She accidentally absorbs it and then ends back up in London. Darcy, in a panic, calls the police since Jane has been missing for 5 hours. She wanders out of the factory and approaches Darcy and the London Police. The police, acting like idiot police everywhere, promptly try to arrest her. When they grab her, the Aether reacts and knocks the police ass over tea kettle. While the police start calling in the big guns, Thor arrives.
While on Earth, they get Dr. Erik Selvig, who was last seen running around Stonehenge naked, out of the nuthouse. Once he is out, he tells everyone about the convergence of the 9 Realms, which the Asgardians have noted is about to occur. When this happens, portals appear on the various worlds and this is what Jame and Darcy had run in to.
Of course, there is a problem. The Aether has awakened the Dark Elves, who have been in suspended animation since they were defeated, and they start looking for it. Back on earth, Thor and Jane go to Asgard where they discover the Aether is in her, and that it will kill eventually.
There is the usual mush and whine and then the fun begins when the Elves attack Asgard. The Elves are in stealthed ships that the Asgardians can’t see. There is a massive battle that the Asgardians barely win. Odin’s wife, Freya takes Jane to her rooms to protect her. She gets into a battle with the leader of the elves and gets run through with a sword. The Elf King goes for Jane demanding the Aether. He runs into a problem when he discovers Jane is not there, and all he sees is a projection.
After the battle, there are the traditional Viking funerals. Freya is laid out in a boat, set on fire and set out with all the other dead warriors. Loki, who was always treated well by his adoptive mother is told and trashes his cell in grief and anger. Odin, not thinking straight, has Jane arrested and locked away due to her infection with the Aether. Thor gets into it with Odin about this, and wants to take Jane away from Asgard and use her as bait to lure the Dark Elves into battle. Once they draw the Aether from Jane, Thor would then destroy it. Odin won’t hear of it.
Thor decides he has no choice, (What a surprise), but to defy Odin and take Jane off Asgard. He goes to Loki and convinces him to help Thor save Jane and destroy the Elves. Loki wants revenge for the death of Freya and agrees. Thor’s friends free Jane who then meets up with Thor and Loki. Jane promptly slugs Loki in the jaw saying “That was for New York.” Loki decides he likes her. As they move to the escape route, each of Thor’s friends threatens Loki, to the point that when the last one threatens him, he say she will have to get in line.
Thor’s plan is simple. He takes a crashed Elf ship and flies, (Very badly) from the palace. As they are being pursued, they transfer to a different ship and Loki steers then through a portal. This one leads to the ashes that was the Elves home world. The Elves follow Jane and Thor and Loki battle them. Loki is run through by the Elf super soldier and dies a heroic death. Jane is caught by the Elf King who removes the Aether from her. Thor tries to destroy it, but fails. The elf ship takes off, leaving Jane and Thor alone.
They take cover in a cave and Jane suddenly gets a call on her cell phone. It’s they guy she had the non-date with. Jane tells him not to hang up and uses the signal to find the portal back to Earth. They meet up with Darcy, Erik and Darcy’s intern, Ian. Erik explains what will happen on Earth when the Convergence occurs and they figure out that Earth is where the Elves will come to release the Aether and destroy the universe. They figure out that the Elves will come to Greenwich and at the moment of the Convergence, boom.
The elves arrive in dramatic fashion and the battle begins. Earth’s forces come on the scene and quickly determine the aliens are hostile. There is a problem with their missiles and then the fighters are dragged through a portal. Thor and the others use all sorts of things to slow or stop the Elf King. Their plan is delay him so he misses the moment.
Using some scientific equipment from Erik, Thor harpoons the Elf King as he is releasing the Aether, and transports him back to the elf home world. He uses the third probe to skewer the Elf King, killing him. Back on Earth, things are cleared up, with the missing fighter jets reappearing just before the portal close.
Thor returns to Asgard to face the music. He meets with Odin and tells him of Loki’s sacrifice. Odin offers him the throne, but Thor declines saying he would be better defending the realm as himself and not as king. Odin understands although he cannot give Thor his blessings. As Thor leaves, Odin’s form transforms and it turns out that it is Loki on the thrown.
Thor returns to Earth to be with Jane. At this point the credits roll. Midway through the credits, a new scene pops up. Two of Thor’s friends, Volstagg and Sif visit the Collector and give him the Aether to guard. In the final scene at the end of the credits, Jane and Thor reunite. While somewhere in London, a frost monster that was accidentally transported to Earth runs amuck.
Now, I’ve already mentioned what I didn’t like with the 3D and the IMAX theater. As to the film itself? Five out of Five stars. The effects were great, the story telling was good and as usual, Tom Hiddleston, who plays Loki, had all the best lines. I highly recommend seeing the film. As to seeing it in 3D, that’s a matter of personal preferences. I’m putting this one on my “Buy the Blu-Ray DVD” list. I think you will like it.
