Global Warming solution, build wooden skyscrapers

Good day all. I’ve been sitting on this story for a while. I simply couldn’t get my head around the utter stupidity that came out from the Obama Regime. Granted, when it comes to utterly stupid ideas, Obama and the Church of Global Warming have pretty much cornered the market.

What is this stupidity I’m talking about? They think it would be a simply smashing idea to build skyscrapers out of wood. Now that you have managed to pick yourself up off the floor, here are the rather amusing details from the Daily Caller:

The White House launched a new campaign to sell its global warming agenda to rural America: “sustainable” buildings, including skyscrapers, made out of wood to lower carbon dioxide emissions. The Agriculture Department (USDA) announced it was launching a new $1 million program to promote wood as a “green” building material to boost rural economies, as well as a $1 million competition “to demonstrate the architectural and commercial viability of using sustainable wood products in high-rise construction,” according to Department.

Wood may be one of the world’s oldest building materials, but it is now also one of the most advanced,” said Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack. “Building stronger markets for innovative new wood products supports sustainable forestry, helps buffer reduce [sic] greenhouse gas emissions, and puts rural America at the forefront of an emerging industry.”

And now, to set fire to this idiocy. First, they want to cut down trees which turn one of those evil green house gasses, Carbon Dioxide, into oxygen. Oxygen is not a green house gas. In fact, it is the one gas that all animal and insect life needs to live. So cutting down these trees and processing them into usable lumber not only reduces the number of trees converting CO2 into O2, turning trees into skyscrapers is going to put a heck of a lot more CO2 into the air.

The Stupid

By some industry estimates, a 3-5 story building made from emerging wood technologies has the same emissions control as taking up to 550 cars of the road for one year,” according to USDA. “Wood-based designs have also been demonstrated to improve energy efficiency, thereby reducing energy consumption for heating and cooling.”

Uh huh, industry estimates huh? Gee, it’s not like they don’t have an interest in selling more lumber.

The wood industry applauded USDA’s plan to promote wood from rural America, saying that such efforts would help the environment and save energy.

Wood building products provide numerous environmental benefits, not the least of which is reducing greenhouse gas emissions and storing atmospheric carbon for decades,” American Wood Council President Robert Glowinski. “Wood products manufacturing also requires much less energy and results in less air and water pollution than many alternative building materials.”

Now, I would assume that using lumber instead of steel and concrete is a bit cheaper. However, there is a reason that you might want to use steel and concrete rather then wood.

But there are worries that have given cities some pause in adopting wooden high-rises. The Oregonian reports that “building codes that restrict wood construction for fear of structural weakness or vulnerability to fire.” Cross-laminated timber panels are combustible, but char and burn out without buckling, reports the Oregonian.

Gee, worrying about a 5-10 story building catching fire and burning to the ground? Why should they be concerned about that? Could it have something to do with a small fire in Chicago in 1871 ((The Great Chicago Fire)) per chance? Oh, then there was this little thing called World War Two and how the 21st Bomber Command aided Japan in a little Urban Renewal between 1942-1945 ((Bombing Tokyo)).

nuclear blast

Then there is the issue of durability.

It’s also unclear if wooden panel high-rises and skyscrapers will have the durability of steel buildings and be as economical as steel. Wooden buildings also need to be treated for termites and can warp and twist over time. Steel does not suffer from such problems.

Wood structures require a lot of maintenance. Just think about how much work you have to put into your house. And then there is the problem of insects. They see a wooden building and the call goes out “LUNCH!”

There is also the problem of strength. There is only so much you can do with wood. Eventually, you will reach a point where it just wont’ be able to do the job. Wooden structures simply aren’t as strong as steel and concrete structures, especially in a disaster situation. Think about 9/11 and the plane the hit the Pentagon. One section suffered horrendous damage, but it was isolated from the rest of the structure. If the Pentagon had been made out of wood, the whole building would have gone up in flames. Long story short, Wood burns, Steel doesn’t.

Rome burning

This idiocy out of the Agricultural Department is just another case of both crony capitalism, the lumber companies trying to get the government to mandate things for their benefit, and more importantly, the continuing work to create a state religion around Global Warming. (All Hail Pope AlGore the First!) Now they are trying to recruit the tree and bush worshipers to their cause. (These bush worshipers differ from the Bush worshipers in the GOP. The bush worshipers idols can be beneficial the a person unlike the GOP Bush worshipers)

Now I don’t have a problem with using lumber in construction. Lumber has it’s place in the construction industry and generates a huge number of jobs. Or I should say it used to. This brings up another problem, the tree worshipers. They are dead set against cutting down trees for any reason. I don’t think the Holy Order of Steel and Concrete has any problems with digging ore out of the ground or turning sand and rocks into cement.

The tree worshipers along with the animal rights fruitloops used the Spotted Owl ((Strix occidentalis)) in the Pacific Northwest to basically destroy the lumber industry in America. They claimed it was an endangered animal and that their habitat was being destroyed. Thanks to the Clinton administration and some really dumb judges the spotted owl won out over humans. Well they were right. The Spotted Owls are being driven out by the Barred Owl ((Northern spotted owls being ousted by barred owl invaders)).

Oops!

What we need is someone to drive the Moonbats out of government, then we can sit down and figure out what we actually need and determine of it will be beneficial for America, and not some stupid feel good idea that will fail miserably. (And cost taxpayers bundles of money)
