Airliners missing from Libya

Good day all. This story broke yesterday and it has massive potential ramifications for America and Europe. Islamist Militants, (Are there any other kind?), took over the Tripoli Airport and made off with nearly a dozen planes of various sizes and types.

The planes disappeared late last month, and this is worrying pretty much all of the worlds intelligence services. Here are the details from the Free Beacon:

Islamist militias in Libya took control of nearly a dozen commercial jetliners last month, and western intelligence agencies recently issued a warning that the jets could be used in terrorist attacks across North Africa.

Umm, just North Africa? Can’t these planes reach Europe and the United States? Just what types are they?

The state-owned Libyan Airlines fleet until this summer included 14 passenger and cargo jetliners, including seven Airbus 320s, one Airbus 330, two French ATR-42 turboprop aircraft, and four Bombardier CJR-900s. Libyan state-owned Afriqiyah Airways fleet is made up of 13 aircraft, including three Airbus 319s, seven Airbus 320s, two Airbus 330s, and one Airbus 340.

Well, the Airbus 320 class has a rough range of 3000 nautical miles. The Airbus 330 class has a range of anywhere between 4000 nautical miles up to 7000 nautical miles depending on variants. The Airbus 340 has a range of up to 9000 nautical miles. Those aircraft are essentially the equivalent of the one’s that hit the World Trade Center and Pentagon on 9/11. They could hit pretty much anyplace in the EU, and they might be able to hit the United States if modified for more fuel capacity.

Tracking these aircraft will be difficult, especially if the pilots have arranged to smuggle them into central or south America. ISIS and other RIF groups have been talking to the drug cartels and Venezuela has actively courted Muslim terrorist groups in the past. If they can get the aircraft into the western hemisphere, and serviced, they could hit the United States again.

The anniversary of the September 11^th attacks is a week away. Thanks to that SCoaMF, Obama, we have been hit by Islamic terrorists again and again. The odds are we are going to get another massive hit inside the United States, and this could be the means to do it.

Now, our air defenses will be on alert, but civilian air traffic control systems use radar transponders to aid in tracking aircraft. One of the things the 911 hijackers did was shut those transponders off. This makes it a lot more difficult to track rogue planes. It’s possible these planes could penetrate our airspace for a fair distance, potentially reaching their targets.

Even if they are spotted, and interceptors are sent up, they would need to get clearance to shoot them down. This means Der Fubar would once again be bothered on the golf course and required to make an actual hard decision. Considering his history, he will freeze up and do nothing. Say what you will about George w. Bush and Dick Cheney. On that horrible day, they quickly made the decision to bring down any unresponsive aircraft by any means possible. That included unarmed fighters to ramming if necessary. We need to find and recover, or destroy those aircraft as soon as possible.
