Review: HP ENVY 4520

Good day all, this is the Angry Systems Administrator with a technology review. I am proud to announce that Anger Central has moved into the 21st century with regards to Printing and scanning. We finally bought a multifunction printer.

We don’t do very much printing on the Anger Central offices and even less scanning. We had but a single, standalone printer for years that served us well. It was an Epson C88+. Our scanner was even more antiquated. It was an ancient USB flatbed scanner that was so old, I had to keep an old Pentium II PC running with Windows 2000 on it.

shocked-face

Last week, we needed to do some printing and the C88 would not respond. Nothing I did would get it working again, so after 10 years, we came to the conclusion we had to get a new one. I did a little research and read a few reviews on Amazon.com and landed on the HP ENVY 4250. This unit is a multi-functional WiFi enabled printer with a built in scanner.

Setting it up took only a few minutes and installing the software not much longer. I ran a few tests with it and, while it isn’t a speed demon, it should serve our needs perfectly. One thing I liked was not having to deal with 4 separate ink cartridges as I used to have to with the Epson C88. The HP uses only two and considering the amount of printing we do around here, I don’t expect to need to replace those cartridges for close to a year. If you are planning to do a lot of printing, I would suggest a more expensive heavy duty system.

Setting up the WiFi wasn’t to difficult, although I would have preferred to do it through the management application instead of using the panel on the printer itself. I haven’t had time yet to configure our smartphones to print via WiFi, but should have that working later in the week. Some of you may be concerned with security and that is a valid worry. For us, we have a simple solution. When the printer isn’t in use, we turn it off to save power.

It will take a few weeks for us to really work it in, but for the money, this came out as a good deal. Of course, your mileage may vary and you should find the system that works best for you. For light usage, I think this printer should work just fine for you.

Thank you
