Anger Central Data Center News

Good morning all, This is the Angry Systems Administrator just bringing a few bytes of information on the back end of Anger Central.

First, we upgraded to WordPress 3.0 last week. So of course WordPress announces an upgrade to 3.0.1.

I’ve long since gotten over my desires to be an early adopter so I’m going to wait a bit on the next upgrade. It’s to much of a pain in the ass to fix this place when things go wrong.
(Note to self: Lock out the admin rights for the Angry Webmaster)

I’ve also disabled the Disqus plugin and gone back to the old comments system. The reason is that Disqus wasn’t posting the trackbacks and pingbacks. Once I figure out why I’ll probably re-enable the plugin. No comments were lost of course.

One of the things I noticed as I was reactivating the comments was that our Captcha wasn’t working. I had disabled that plugin as well since it wasn’t needed. I checked the settings and it had lost the keys.

I went to the ReCaptcha site and found that Google had bought them? WTF?? Damn! No matter what we do, Google is determined to take over the world. Once again a great service has been corrupted by the most evil corporation of the 21st century. In any case, I’ll be tweaking the settings on that so it won’t be bothering registered posters.

Over on the main site, the twitter counter has been acting rather weird of late. Normally the loudmouth Angry Webmaster averages about 125 followers. Lately I’ve seen this thing bounce between 5 and 2,000,000 followers. Obviously the service is experiencing some technical difficulties. Of course it’s fun watching the idiot’s Webmaster’s head swell up only to pop a minute later. *evil grin*

I’ve also gotten the Who’s Online page working. It was one little variable that was missing. A simple little variable that appeared NO WHERE IN THE README! (emphasis mine) I found it on a forum somewhere.

On a business note, the Angry Webmaster sent along a rant from the main site that came in a week or so ago. One of his posters was angry about the ads we run. Hey Doofus! We don’t like them either, but we have to pay for this site. You don’t want them, use an ad blocker. There are a number out there.

It isn’t like we make a huge pile of cash from the ads anyway. Since we lost Chitika earlier this year, (Now they’re back), we’ve been trying to find a replacement that would at least match our costs. so far only one has come close and they have a minimum amount before they send you your money. Other advertising services have been a total disappointment and one actually hosted malware for a day. That got us on Google’s malware list while we tracked it down. At least Chitika checks their content before the send it along. (Their servers are a lot faster too)

Don’t even ask about Google’s Adsense. The Webmaster has posted about their behavior in the past. Just search the main site.

Well that’s it for the latest from the Anger Central Data Center. It’s back to the salt mines for me, cleaning up the latest disaster idea of the Angry Webmaster’s.
