Review: Bosch: Legacy

Good day all. Recently, I’ve been watching the “Sequel” to Amazon’s Bosch series, which concluded it’s run last year. The series was probably the most popular that Amazon produced, (ranking with The Expanse), and ran for 7 years. The series was based on the books by Michael Connelly and was a police procedural revolving around Harry Bosch, a Hollywood Homicide detective.

The series starred Titus Welliver in the title role of Harry Bosch, and Madison Lintz as his daughter, Madeline “Maddie” Bosch, as well as several others throughout the series. Ms. Lintz was cast when she was about 14-15 years old and basically grew up on the series.

When the series ended last year, there was talk of a spin off possibly revolving around the character of Maddy Bosch. The details finalized and the new series was moved from Amazon Prime to the Amazon owned network, FreeVee. (Formally IMDB) The new series “Dropped” early in May and appears to be an instant hit.

It takes place a couple of years after the end of the original Bosch series. Harry Bosch is now a private investigator and Maddie Bosch is now a rookie LAPD officer. Also cast is Mimi Rogers who is reprising her role as Honey, “Money” Chandler, Attorney at Law. The series opens with the trial of Carl Rodgers, the corrupt billionaire who hired a hit man to kill both honey Chandler and Maddie Bosch. Due to a technicality, Rogers gets off. Chandler and Harry decide to try and bring him down. (I won’t spoil things for you. Watch the series)

Maddie, meanwhile, is now on patrol with her training officer. She has her first “case” involving a woman who was raped. She is not able to let it go and starts looking into things and doing what she can for the victim. (Obviously, setting things up for her eventual promotion to plain clothes detective liker her father)

There have been several members of the original cast brought back, if only for a few minutes, or in the case of the now retired “Crate & Barrel,” for a couple of episodes. The series follows the usual lines of the original with several plot lines and cases going on. The reception has been excellent with Rotten Tomatoes scoring it a 100% on their “Tomatometer” and 96% audience score. It was also announced that the series has already been renewed for a second season.

One of the things I’ve noticed about the new series is that it’s a bit “rougher” then the original. The language is definitely stronger. You can also see the work that Ms. Lintz has put in for her character, both in physical training and weapons training. (far beyond the normal on set safety training that Alec Baldwin disdains)

There are a few more episodes remaining, (They are released on Fridays), and I can’t wait for the next season. Unlike the Amazon Prime series, the Freevee series does have commercial breaks, but they are minimal and not all that disruptive. (Don’t look at making a quick run to the bathroom. The breaks have generally been 2 minutes or less) If you’re a Bosch fan, I hope you’re watching the show. I certainly am.
