Anger Central, Social Media and other fun things, 2023

Hello all, this is the Angry Systems Administrator wishing all of you a better 2023 then you had 2022. Hopefully things will improve for all of us, but I’m not holding my breath. The drunken idiot Angry Webmaster has already covered a few things, however I’ll go into a bit more detail.

First, the Big News as it were. The Angry Webmaster decided that the time had come to put the main site, Anger Central, into archive mode. We have deactivated the add pages, both the primary one on the main site and the backup one on the Blog. Before we pushed the final update this morning, we had the last two bits of spam come in, which we promptly deleted.

This was not an easy decision to make, since the main Anger Central site has been a major part of our lives for literally decades. Still, as the Angry Blowhard Webmaster stated, we just weren’t seeing the traffic to the site we once did and the time we were spending maintaining and updating it was no longer justified.

On the Musings of the Angry Webmaster blog, we have been seeing some increases in traffic, (Although no one seem to want to buy anything on our Amazon links) with a few posts hitting the 10K page views. (Which shocked us to no end. It’s usually 50-100 page views for one of the Loudmouth’s posts)

We were also forced to change our preferred theme on the blog. It was sadly out of date and no longer supported. We spent a good deal of time finding something that was similar to our original theme, but found nothing that fit the bill. Since neither the Angry Webmaster or I are developers, especially WordPress developers, we had to go with one of the stock themes.

When we switched themes, we also decided to get rid of Disqus as our comment tool. They started putting up some really obnoxious ads, so we decided to pull everything back in house, take Disqus out behind the barn, and put it down, old Yeller style. We went with another tool that provides us with more control and keeps the comments in house. I’m still looking at some of the tools we can buy to see if it’s worth the money. (We might see a couple of comments a month)

On the Social Media front, there have been a few back end changes that just happened. We use Jetpack for a lot of administrative tools, and one of the things they had was a tool that let us post things to Socialist Media automatically when we posted to the blog. It was limited, in that they didn’t offer a lot of choices. We used it to automatically post to our Twitter and Facebook accounts. Sometime in the last few weeks, Jetpack turned this into a Paid service, so now we are back to manually posting to our social media feeds. (I am looking for an alternative)

Which brings us to Twitter and the like. We have accounts on Twitter, and a page on Facebook. Up until recently, Twitter had been very stagnant. Things started changing a bit when Elon Musk took over. Initially, we saw a net loss of followers. I suspect these were just bots, so no great loss. We’ve slowly seen an increase of new followers and now have a few more then we did when Musk took over Twitter and fired all the censors. However, we still aren’t seeing very many retweets of the posts by the Angry Moron Webmaster. Perhaps this will change as Musk cleans out the trash and the shadow bans are lifted.

We also have accounts on Gab, GETTR and Parler. We don’t see much traffic on Gab, but we do see an occasional new follower and the occasional “Retweet” of a post. Parler, I’m sad to say, appears to be all but dead. We do not see any reposts and we’ve seen no new subscribers in a year. We may decide to just drop it. GETTR does show some reports and on occasional new subscriber. However, I have a suspicion that a lot of them are bots.

We also joined “The Big One,” President Trump’s Truth Social. That one does show a lot of likes, reposts and we are also seeing a new subscriber or two every couple of weeks. (Some drop off as well once they realize that the Angry Webmaster is not a WOKE moonbat) Between Twitter and Truth Social, up until Musk’s takeover, it appeared that Truth Social was going to be the way forward. With Twitter, we thought we might end up either getting booted off of Twitter or just dropping it. Now we’re probably going to stay with both.

One of the other issues, more annoying then anything else, are the share buttons on the site. We run two sets. One, the top bar, leads directly to our profiles. The second bar belongs to Share This. You need accounts on the sites you want to share our posts to, either with the one that goes to our profile or to the one that takes you to the sites in question.

The top bar has Gab, Paler and MeWe, (I forgot to mention we also have an account and a “Member’s page” on MeWe). MeWe is also seeing growth, likes, comments and the occasional reshare of a post. MeWe is generally populated with a lot of refugees from Facebook who have been banned and their accounts revoked for the crime of thinking for themselves.

We also had a bit of a scare abut a month ago. We’ve been using Pinterest to store all the meme’s the Angry Webmaster either collects or creates. All of a sudden, we couldn’t access them nor were we able to add any new ones. It looks like it was a technical glitch on their side, but we took no chances and have downloaded all of our images to local storage.

We will continue using Pinterest, but if/when the do lock us out and delete everything, we will be ready for them. (They have deleted images that they didn’t like, none were pornographic) Since Pinterest is owned by Facebook and we all know what they like to do, well, better safe then sorry.

So what will 2023 bring to Angry.net? Frankly, I have no idea. The Angry Webmaster will continue venting his spleen about whatever angers him at the moment. I will continue working to keep things running on an even keel while investigating any tools that will make my life easier. (I couldn’t care less of that technologically incompetent reprobate find ways to make his job easier. He’s the main cause of my heartburn)

Thank you
