Movie Review: The Green Lantern

Greetings all, it’s time for another movie review. Last night I took in Green Lantern in 3D. I was not impressed. It’s not that it was a bad movie, it’s just that it could have been so much better.

First, the setup.

Mrs. Webmaster had to work yesterday and I had just come off the Day from Hell at my Real World Job. I was tired and didn’t want to do any thinking. I had wanted to see Thor, but missed it due to my work schedule. (Slaves get more time off than I do)

I had heard that Green Lantern was a bit disappointing, but I figured “What the Hell, I’m tired and want entertainment.” Normally I would have preferred to go to the 2D version. That wasn’t an option at this theater so 3D it was. This was also my first 3D movie.

So off to Chunky’s I went.

My first complaint was the extra $3 for the 3D glasses. My second complain was the 3D glasses. I wear glasses and had to put these things over them. I’m near sighted so I need to take my glasses off if I want to read a menu or examine something close to my face. Since I was eating and reading a menu I had to keep taking both pairs of glasses off and then putting them back on. I can’t wait until they perfect holography. 🙂

I will say the 3d Effect was interesting. I’ve seen 2D versions of movies where they added the 3D effects as an afterthought and it shows. (Resident Evil 4 comes to mind) Here the CGI was done very well. The effects flowed nicely and looked quite real. (And that statement will drive a few directors up the wall no doubt)

The one failing was the plot.

Although I haven’t looked at a Green Lantern comic book in a very long time, the plot for this one would probably have been rejected by the editors. I understand the writers and director are introducing a new franchise, but please, a bit more reality in the back story? Also, making me want to give a damn about the characters would help.

This was the major problem for me. I didn’t care what happened to the characters. The lead, Hal Jordan, was a complete jerk for me. Here he is, a top flight pilot and he has confidence issues.

Hello, have you ever met a fighter pilot? The one thing they don’t lack is self confidence.

Also mentioned in other reviews was the weapons and other stuff generated by the Green Lantern/Hal Jordan. Obviously, this guy has no imagination. He’s fighting the ultimate evil in the universe and all he can come up with is a quad .50? Where are the phasers? The disintegration beams? How about at least one thermonuclear weapon? Nope, this clown comes up with swords, shields and a few hammers.

Now the actors did the best they could, and it shows, but with mediocre writing and a director in love with special effects, writing and plot development tend to be low on the budget list.

So, do I recommend this movie? Only if you are 12 years old. Otherwise, wait for it to come on to cable. Basic cable that is. It isn’t worth paying for.

Now, the theater.

Once again I went off to Chunky’s. This time I had their meatloaf. It was ok, but not as good as other items I’ve had there. I did have a large chocolate ice cream sundae, which is not something I normally have. Considering how bloated I feel I should have passed it up. 😉

Well, the next movies I plan on seeing is Captain America and Cowboys & Aliens.

Until next time,

I haven’t seen Green Lantern, but since I work at a movie theater, I’ve seen parts of it.  I’m interested in this movie because it looks scary.

Captain America looks awesome.  Cowboys vs Aliens looks ok too.

Your movie theater offers meatloaf and ice cream sundaes?  That’s amazing!  What kinds of other food do they offer?
