And the destruction of America continues

Good evening all. During the Cold War, the United States Navy had 15 Aircraft Carriers available to deploy in the event of World War Three. Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, the number of carriers has been reduced to 11.

Very soon, the first nuclear carrier, the USS ENTERPRISE, will be taken out of commission and retired. There are three new carriers under construction or being planned. The first one, the USS Gerald Ford isn’t due until 2015. The United States Congress has mandated that the navy have at least 11 carriers in commission. Due to the timing of the retirement of the Enterprise and the commissioning of the Ford, there will be a period where we will only have 10 carriers.

Now, thanks to Obama’s plan to gut the military, the Navy is thinking that they will only be able to field 10 carriers.

From the Washington Times:

As Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta prepares to introduce the strategy’s first budget next month, the Navy has been in a furious fight behind the scenes to protect only 10 carriers, sources familiar with the issue told The Washington Times.

The fleet used to have 12 carriers and should have at least 13. Conventional wisdom holds that for each carrier on station, one is in port and one is traveling either to or from port. Since we cut back to 11 carriers, the navy has been stretched.

The sources say that, while the fiscal 2013 budget may well continue 11 carriers, the Navy will be down to 10 or even nine carriers within in the next five years.

This is unacceptable. The Democrats have been working to destroy the military and turn the nation into a socialist one party state for decades. Now, with Obama, they may finally succeed. They would rather waste money on their cronies and paying off their supporters than follow their one constitutional duty of defending the United States. If they want to save money, I have a few suggestions. Let’s start by closing a few of these agencies like the Labor Department, the EPA and Education department, just to name a few.

Reducing one carrier would set off a fight in Congress, which under law has required the Navy to maintain 11 active flattops. A source familiar with the discussions said the Obama administration would not want to take up that fight until after November’s presidential election, given the importance of Virginia and its 13 electoral votes.

As usual, with Obama it isn’t the United State he gives a damn about, it’s Barack Hussein Obama. The plans to gut the military, especially with the state of the world, is the worst possible thing we can do. We need to rebuild and update our weapons and increase the number of our troops, not cut them back further.

Mr.Loren Thompson said carriers face three basic challenges.

“First of all, they have become extremely expensive to build and operate,” he said. “Secondly, some countries, such as China, are developing the capacity to target and disable them from long distances.

“And, thirdly, the advent of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter and unmanned aircraft will make it easier to accomplish air missions from other sea-based platforms.

Allow me to disassemble Mr. Thompson’s statements. We’ll start with the F-35. A news item was just released stating that the F-35 has a design flaw that may not allow it to operate from carriers. Apparently the tail hook is to short and can’t be shifted. There is a version being designed for the United States Marines that has vertical take off and landing capability, but it’s having its own issues, and that type of takeoff gulps fuel and limits the payload.

His remark on China working on a way to damage or destroy our carriers? Excuse me Mr. Thompson, but we have been dealing with that threat since Japan sank the USS Langley in 1942. The Soviets spent decades working on that as well. We know how carriers can be sunk as well as how to sink them.

As to his first remark, well of COURSE carriers are expensive to operate. The military is not a profit center. It’s not meant to be. It’s meant to make an enemy think twice about attacking us, and if they do so, then the military needs the resources to pound the ever living snot out of them.

Now this isn’t all Obama or Panetta’s doing Former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates did a horrendous amount of damage during his tenure, especially under Obama. By rights he should have left when Bush finished his term, but this slimy beltway weasel sucked up to Obama to keep his job. I suspect that when historians look back, they will consider him to be almost as bad as Robert McNamara.

If all these cuts go in, you can bet that sometime in the next 5-10 years we will get slammed so hard we may not be able to recover or we will be forced to go to the nuclear option.

This is yet another reason we need to get Obama, the Democrats and not a few Republicans the hell out of office. We also need to keep that utter jerk Ron Paul as far away as possible from the White House. (He can visit as a tourist like the rest of us)

Ron Paul would make an excellent Secretary of the Treasury.  But certainly not a President.
