Major Ly Bung

In 1975, the Republic of South Vietnam fell to the communist invasion from the north. There were thousands of stories about the last days of South Vietnam. One of the most disgraceful parts was the abandonment of the South Vietnamese by the Democrats. This was the first of many sellouts by Democrats of course.

However, I’m not going to talk about the Vietnam war. Instead, I have a video of a remarkable man who took a chance, a long shot really with a high risk of failure and death, to save his family from the Communist takeover. His name is Ly Bung and he was a Major in the South Vietnam Army. Here is his story in in his own words:

What you may not know is this was the first and only time this type of aircraft, a Cessna O-1 Bird Dog observation plane, had ever landed on an aircraft carrier. The plane was never designed to do this. Here is the video of Major Bung landing on the USS Midway, April 30th. 1975:

I recall the fall of South Vietnam. I remember the waves of South Vietnamese helicopters filled beyond capacity looking for American ships to land on. I remember seeing the films of the carrier’s crew pushing the empty helicopters over the side to make room for more coming in. All of those people, literally risking their lives in the hopes of finding a deck they could land on in the hopes of gaining safety.

Major Bung’s plane was not thrown over the side. It is in a museum in Florida ((Cessna OE-1 Bird Dog Acquired)). Thanks to the piloting skills and bravery of Major Bung, America gained a fine example of a new American family
