Good day all. A news story this morning regarding the Navy SEALS boarding a Libyan tanker and taking control from a group of armed men.
First, three cheers to the SEALS for doing their typical excellent job and thank God there were no causalities on our side. Apparently there were none on the other side, but frankly, who cares really? Here are the details from Fox News:
Navy SEALs have boarded and taken command of an oil tanker that was seized by three armed men at a Libyan port earlier this month, thwarting an attempt by a splinter militia group from selling nationalized Libyan oil on the black market.
A Pentagon spokesman said that the operation was carried out Sunday night on orders from President Obama in international waters southeast of Cyprus, at the request of the Libyan and Cypriot governments. There were no casualties. The USS Roosevelt provided an embarkation point for the SEALs as well as helicopter support and served as a command and control and support platform.
A group of around 30 men from Navy SEAL team 2 approached the Morning Glory oil tanker using rigid hull inflatable boats and used ladders to get on board. Two AK-47’s were found on the ship, but no shots were fired. The rebels are detained on board and will be handed over to Libyan authorities. The SEALS have since left the ship but 25 sailors from the USS Stout are now on board.
As I said before, WELL DONE NAVY! Now my question is, why the hell were they deployed for this in the first place? Were any Americans in danger from these “Rebels?” Nope, since there were none on the ship. Well then, the rebels were going to use the ship and cargo for some sort of nefarious evil terrorist deed against America. That doesn’t seem to be the case here.
“The Morning Glory is carrying a cargo of oil owned by the Libyan government National Oil Company. The ship and its cargo were illicitly obtained from the Libyan port of As-Sidra,” a statement from Rear Adm. John Kirby’s read. This past August, the rebels had seized three export terminals in the port that previously accounted for 700,000 barrels of oil per day. The struggle for control of Libya’s oil wealth has been one of the main sources of strife in the country since the overthrow of Muammar Qaddafi in 2011.
So, this looks like a case of Grand Theft Oil, not some sort of terrorist plot. Since when did the Navy SEALS become Libyan police? Ok, technically this could be considered piracy, what with the thieves hijacking the ship. Oh wait, they didn’t steal the ship after all.
The ship was docked at the port under the flag of North Korea, but officials in Pyongyang told the Associated Press they had canceled the vessel’s registration after being notified that the tanker had been loaded for export in defiance of the authorities in Tripoli.
So it looks like that these rebels owned this ship and were using the North Koreans as a flag of convenience. Then the NK’s pulled their registration which allowed the SEALS to “Legally” board and take the ship. I guess the Libyan government made a better offer to the North Koreans. This still doesn’t answer the question of why the SEALS were sent in instead of Libyan police or military personnel. Oh wait, I see. This was Obama once again trying to show that he is actually a “Tough” president instead of the spineless SCoaMF we all know him to be. That and probably the Libyans offered Obama a small share of the profits from the sale of that oil.
Gee, does that sound a little cynical? Well, yes, considering who we have as a president. He only has a couple of years left in office and we know that Michelle is very high maintenance. He’s going to need millions unless he wants to deal with her incessant nagging for the rest of his life. He certainly isn’t like Hillary Clinton. She has anyone who annoys her either destroyed or killed, usually both. (Makes the “suicide” look more believable)
Again, a tip of the hat to the United States Navy and the members of the SEAL team who took the tanker away from the criminals. (Sorry, I can’t call them pirates since it seems they owned the ship)
