Changing web browsers to Pale Moon

Good afternoon all. This is the Angry Systems Administrator. I have been using Firefox as my default web browser for easily 10 years. Today, I scrapped it and went with a fork called Pale Moon.

I’ve been having some serious issues with Firefox for the last few months. Plugins and themes that worked fine suddenly stopped and more importantly, web sites stopped rendering correctly. (Facebook stopped a few months ago and recently LinkedIn stopped working) I’ve been using Chrome and Internet Exploder. Chrome is ok, but I’ve never been thrilled with it. Internet Explorer? I don’t need to go into what a disaster that’s always been.

I literally heard about Pale Moon this morning when a web site forum mentioned it after the fiasco with the Mozilla CEO. (It seems the developers have an issue with anyone who disagrees with them politically. I’ll let the Angry Webmaster deal with that one) I decided to take a look at it and downloaded the portable version. I hit a few sites and LinkedIn and Facebook both worked. However, I wanted all my themes, plugins and other customized configurations and wasn’t looking forward to a couple fo days of downloads and configuring stuff. Then I remembered the Sync feature in Firefox.

I’ve used this feature to keep all my Firefox copies synchronized. Since Pale moon is a fork of Firefox, it had the feature as well. I configured the portable version to sync up and then hit the button. It was really cool watching all the bookmarks and things start populating. It took about 20 minutes and a couple of restarts, but other then the Pale Moon Icon, it looks just like my copy of Firefox.

I then installed the full version and repeated the sync process. After some testing, I made Pale Moon my new default browser, removed all the shortcuts to Firefox from the desktop and start menu and put it into mothballs. I won’t delete it since I may need it for something. I did have to go into some of the add-ons and pull config files from them, but otherwise, I am very satisfied.

Firefox used to be a good browser, but over the last year or so, it’s gotten rather bloated. From what I’ve been reading, the developers are trying to make it look like Google Chrome, although why is beyond me. That, in my mind, would be like making Google Chrome work like Internet Explorer. One issue I found, and it isn’t a show stopper, is the Pale Moon developers have not ported this to the android phone. That’s ok. I can live with Chrome on my phone.

So, in closing, I do recommend Pale Moon if you’ve grown tired of dealing with Firefox, but don’t want to use Chrome, Opera, Internet Explorer or any of the other browsers out there. I don’t think you will be disappointed.

Thank you

Pale moon is nowhere near as smooth on my Low end devices or my high end for that matter. Pale Moon x64 is a great alternative browser though

Edit; I see my comment is waiting to be approved.. sadly it probably won’t be

    • Sorry for the delay, but everyone was out and I didn’t see this until this morning. We’re using Pale Moon x64. Firefox is kept around for odds and ends that neither Infernal Exploder or Pale Moon, can handle. (Basically corporate VPN connections)
