Good day all, while I was traveling I saw this amusing story about an Iranian admiral threatening to attack American aircraft carriers.
When I saw the headline from the story I just rolled my eyes. Here are the details from The Hill:
Iran will target U.S. aircraft carriers based in the Persian Gulf if a war were to ever erupt between both countries, an Iranian naval chief warned Tuesday.
“Aircraft carriers are the symbol of America’s military might,” Adm. Ali Fadavi, according to the Fars news agency. “The carriers are responsible for supplying America’s air power. So, it’s natural that we want to sink the carriers.”
Now the Admiral is correct that our carriers are a legitimate target. Actually sinking one? That isn’t so easy. Since it isn’t easy, the Iranians decided to practice a bit.
Fadavi is naval chief of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard and made the remarks as Iran completes a large-scale mock-up of a U.S. carrier. Iran is currently building a replica of the USS Nimitz aircraft carrier, which will be used in future military exercises. The Revolutionary Guard’s navy has already targeted mock-up U.S. warships, Fadavi said, adding it took only 50 seconds to destroy one of them.
It’s always easier to destroy a fake ship that isn’t shooting at you then a real one that is you moron. The United States Navy isn’t all that concerned either.
A U.S. Navy official in the Persian Gulf dismissed Iran’s warnings.
“Whatever Iran hopes to do with the mock-up, it is likely to have zero impact on U.S. Navy operations in the Gulf,” Cmdr. Jason Salata, a spokesman for the U.S. Navy’s 5th Fleet, told the Associated Press.
Here is a more visual representation of the Navy’s opinion of the Iranian’s naval capabilities.

Iran might like to think it’s easy to sink a carrier. Perhaps they should reflect on what nations have actual experience in fighting carrier battle groups and how well they did. That would be:
-
The United States
-
Imperial Japan
-
Nazi Germany
-
Great Britain
Not a big list is it? Frankly, you can reduce that number to two. The United States and Imperial Japan are the only nations that fought carrier to carrier battles. Japan sank a few of ours and we sank all of theirs. Germany managed to bag a couple of British carriers with either U-boats or in one case, a Surface Action Group ((HMS Glorious)).
Back during the Cold War, the USSR worked for decades developing weapons and tactics to deal with our carriers. While they were doing that, we were building carriers that are tough to sink. Since World War Two, we have had several very serious accidents on our carriers, and although they were heavily damaged, they remained afloat and were able to repair the damage and resume operations.
In point of fact, the last U.S. carrier that was lost due to enemy action was the USS Bismarck Sea (CVE-95), and that really doesn’t count as a full carrier. The Bismark Sea was a small escort carrier ((The escort carrier or escort aircraft carrier)) and far less capable then the fleet carriers. The last full sized carrier we lost due to enemy action was the USS Hornet. ((USS Hornet (CV-8))) Many others were damaged, some severely ((USS Franklin (CV 13))), but all made it back to base for repairs.
If that Iranian Admiral thinks he’s going to sink a carrier, then he needs to lay off the recreational use of pharmaceuticals. Sending out speed boats with RPG’s isn’t going to do anything other then provide the Navy with a little target practice. If he thinks that launching an air attack will work, well, he better make sure he has more planes then the US Navy has missiles, fighters, and cannon. The navy has been practicing to defend a carrier group against missiles and planes for almost a century. The Iranian navy has been practicing to be targets for the American Navy for 30 years, and they have been very successful at it too. I’m sure they will continue being very successful targets for the Navy.
