Iranian nuclear site goes boom

Good day all. A story out of Iran reports that they’ve had a little “Oopsy!” at their nuclear facility near Tehran. It doesn’t appear that any radioactive material was released, but the incident was fatal.

Apparently the blast was very intense and it killed at least two of the workers on site. The Jerusalem Post has the details:

Two people died in an explosion that ripped through an explosive material production unit at a nuclear facility near Tehran, according to Iranian press reports on Monday. The incident occurred at the Parchin military compound, not far from the Iranian capital, according to the Iranian Students News Agency.

The BBC said on Monday that a pro-opposition website was also reporting an explosion at the site. The BBC cited the pro-reform website Sahamnews as saying that the explosion on Sunday evening was “so intense that windows of buildings 15 km (nine miles) away were shattered.”

“The glare from the blast could also be seen from a great distance,” the report said.

Now that is an Earth Shattering Kaboom so beloved by Marvin the Martian.

Israel in the past has alleged that Iran has used its Parchin military base as the site for secret tests of technology that could be used only for detonating a nuclear weapon.

Well, whatever went boom was far more powerful then the primary detonation charges used for nuclear weapons ((Implosion (mechanical process))). I’m not a nuclear physicist, nor do I have any experience with conventional explosives, but the primary charges needed really aren’t that big. For a blast like they are describing, it sounds like several thousand pounds might have gone up.

I’m sure that Israel’s internal response to this, (Internal as inside the government), is “Oh what a shame, all that nice real estate turned into a smoking crater.” The Israeli’s have made no secret that they consider Iran to be a major threat to their very existence. Their fears aren’t helped by the Iranians making outright threats to nuke Israel as soon as they have the ability to do so ((Iran’s leader threatens to level cities if Israel attacks)). As to what caused the blast, no one is saying. Mossad’s spokesman was not available for comment, however a large delivery of Champagne was made to their headquarters.
