Samsung Galaxy S6

Good day all, this is the Angry Systems Administrator. Last week Samsung announced their new Smartphone, the Galaxy S6.

As you may recall, a few years ago I upgraded the Angry Blabbermouth Webmaster’s as well as my own phone from the old style feature phones to the Galaxy S3 models. The only reason we were able to actually consider moving to Smartphones was was our ability to leave AT&T and move over to Ting.com.

We’ve been using this service for several years, even though they are currently using the Sprint Network as their backbone. The cost savings made the move worth it and also allowed us to upgrade to the S3’s we are currently using. (FYI, Ting is also testing a GSM network so they can broaden their services)

Now, it’s about time to look at updating to new phones. It will be at least a month before the new Galaxy phones, (The S6 and the S6 Edge), are formally released for sale. I didn’t watch the announcement. I had other things to do. I have been reading the specifications for the two models and I do like most of what I saw. There are two areas of concern for me though. Samsung has decided to make the battery a permanent fixture instead of removable and they have done away with the SD slot for external storage.

To make up for the lack of an SD slot, they have increased the on board storage to a maximum of 128GB. I have no doubt that will be the most expensive phone. Samsung has also claimed that new technology reduces power usage. I haven’t had the need to replace my current battery, so this may be ok. They have also included Wireless Charging, although I’m not to sure about that feature.

Samsung has also decided the time is right to remove most of the crapware on their phones. This I consider a major plus, along with the latest version of Android. One of the things I’ve been doing since we bought the S3’s has been shutting off apps that we just don’t want. Samsung has also changed the design slightly as well as changed materials. Frankly, that doesn’t matter to me.

Reviews of the S6 are on the web, and the phone is scheduled to go on sale April 10. I do not expect to buy the first ones, and will probably wait until the summer. One reason is, I have no idea how much these things are going to cost. We are setting aside some funds in our budget, and the Angry Whiner Webmaster is drooling over it. Mrs. Webmaster doesn’t want an Android phone, so we might upgrade her to an Iphone 6 billboard model. We’ll keep you informed on if and when we buy these things.

Thank you

The Angry Systems Administrator
