Good day all. A little while back news came out that Oregon had passed a law mandating that everyone be automatically registered to vote, whether they want to or not.
Besides imposing on people’s choices, this opens the door to even more chances for the Democrats to steal elections out there. Here are a few details from Fox News:
Seventeen years after Oregon became the first state to hold all elections with mail-in ballots, it took another pioneering step on Monday to broaden participation by automatically registering people to vote. Gov. Kate Brown signed a bill that puts the burden of registration on the state instead of voters.
This isn’t the way the founders envisioned things in my opinion. Voting was and is considered a civic duty, and then there is the problem of those who are ineligible to vote, either through loss of the right due to criminal conviction or non-citizenship. In any case, this is how it works.
Under the legislation, every adult citizen in Oregon who has interacted with the Department of Motor Vehicles since 2013 but hasn’t registered to vote will receive a ballot in the mail at least 20 days before the next statewide election. The measure is expected to add about 300,000 new voters to the rolls.
Oh great. No verification of citizenship or even that they are residents of the state. You do know who this is designed to benefit don’t you? The Progressive Liberal Fascist Democrats of course.
Some other states have considered such legislation but none has gone as far as Oregon. Minnesota nearly implemented automatic voter registration in 2009 before the plan was vetoed by Gov. Tim Pawlenty, who said “registering to vote should be a voluntary, intentional act.”
Since when do the PLFD’s believe in anything that smacks of choice? Unless it’s the choice to have an abortion of course. Then they are happy to let you choose. Of course, if you don’t, they might decide you are unfit to be a parent and take your children from you.
Similar concerns were raised by Oregon’s minority Republicans. “Simply because it makes us unique or makes us first does not necessarily mean that it actually improves on what we’re doing,” said state Sen. Jackie Winters, a Republican from Salem.
There are a few other issues the Republicans were concerned about, like securing the data people provide when registering. This is the DMV after all.
Oregon Republicans also voiced worry about potential voter fraud, the cost of implementing the measure, and whether the DMV can ensure personal information remains secure.
Oh, that there will be massive voter fraud is a given. That’s a feature as far as the PLFD’s are concerned. And if people’s identity is stolen? Oh well, them’s the breaks. As you might expect, this was not a bipartisan measure.
When it came up for a vote in the state Senate last week, all Republicans and one Democrat voted against it. The Democrats hold a 18-12 advantage in the Senate so the bill easily passed.
That should tell you all you need to know. If it were a good idea, then they would have had more people supporting it.
State Sen. Elizabeth Steiner Hayward, a Portland Democrat who carried the bill in the Senate, said there were rumblings the measure was a “secret plot” to enroll more Democrats. But she denied that was true.
If it walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, it’s probably a duck. Now there is a way to not be registered of course.
People eligible to vote will get a postcard saying they’ve been registered and have three weeks to opt out. They’ll be automatically registered as unaffiliated but can select a political party from the postcard and return it to election officials through the mail.
And again, no verification that the individual is actually entitled to vote. Nope, this can’t possibly go wrong.
Automatic registration is not uncommon in other countries. A 2009 report by the Brennan Center for Justice says nations where the government takes the lead in enrolling voters have much higher registration rates. Argentina has a 100 percent registration rate, while Sweden, Australia and Canada all have registration rates over 90 percent.
And we should emulate those other countries because why? Oh I know! Because we aren’t really Americans, we’re “Citizens of the World!”
Myrna Perez, deputy director of the Brennan Center’s Democracy Program, said a state needs to already have reliable agency records of eligible Americans who have demonstrated citizenship in order to successfully follow in Oregon’s footsteps. In Oregon, people must provide a birth certificate or passport to get a driver’s license or register a car.
Hmm, so there is some verification then? I won’t go into why I need to provide a passport or birth certificate just to register a car. Frankly, it doesn’t matter. Voting is a right of course, but it’s also a duty. You need to actively go to where ever they have you register, provide proof of citizenship and then get on the rolls. I did this when I turned 18 and I did it again when I moved to a new home. I also have a bit of a problem with voting by mail. As part of your civic duty, you should show up at the polls.
Mail in ballots can be lost, delayed or destroyed. Just ask members of the military who are overseas. They all want to vote, they are supposed to have ballots delivered to them so they can vote, but it’s always interesting how they can’t seem to get their ballots back to the home towns in a timely manner. Everything else gets sent back and forth in a matter of days, but ballots? They seem to “Get lost in the mail” especially if the troops might vote for a Republican.
No, I don’t like this and I think it’s going to be a bad idea and will backfire badly. I do see the potential for massive fraud, stolen and destroyed ballots from areas likely not to vote for the PLFD candidate as well as votes from people who have been dead for a century. People are getting tired of the games the PLFD’s like to play to make sure they always win and this looks to me as just another way for them to cheat.
