Good day all, this is the Angry Systems Administrator. I just saw the Angry Webmaster posting about a few issues we had last week. Last Thursday, the blog and main sites were going up and down like a yoyo.
When I was finally able to start digging into things, I found the ratings system was not working. I also found that a scheduled post didn’t go live. (The Angry Webmaster manually pushed that out) As I started trying to determine what the issues were, I found that there was some corruption in the SQL database that runs WordPress blogs.
This was the table that handled the Ratings data. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the plugin, but that didn’t fix the issue. I was starting to contemplate dropping the the tables and rebuilding them when I lost connection to the site. In fact all the sites and the administration site were down.
I was in the process of writing up a trouble ticket to our Hosting company when the site came back online. I also found that the ratings plugin was working again. I suspect that there was a runaway process on that server, (We share it with other customers), and the hosting company bounced the server. In any case, things are working again for the most part.
Which brings me to another ongoing issue. As you know, we have an RSS feed that lets people with a reader get a notice that new postings are now available. We actually have three feeds. One is the built in feed from WordPress and handles all blog postings. The other is a manual feed, (The Angry Webmaster uses a tool to generate it), on the main site. Recently we also set up a Feedburner RSS feed.
We did this when we noticed that on occasions the main WordPress RSS feed would stop working and we would see error messages in our RSS readers. Then, usually after something like 10 postings were made, WordPress would suddenly dump all the RSS notices that had been held up at once. We’ve both seen this happen with other sites that use WordPress and I’m thinking it’s a bug, not a feature. Until WordPress fixes the issue, we’re recommending you use the Feedburner feed.
Thank you for your patience. (And don’t forget to rate our postings)
