Sikhs are cool!

Good day all. With the recent attack by Islamic Terrorists, I thought it would be a good idea to remind people that while one group appears to be Islamic, they most assuredly are not.

I am speaking of the people who follow the Sikh religion. I will freely admit that I am not very familiar with Sikhism, and to those who are followers of the faith, please forgive me if I make any errors. I will happily correct them if notified.

One of the reasons that Sikhs are sometimes confused with Muslims is the fact that a Sikh man wears a turban. People in the west who are not familiar with Sikhism will see a man wearing that headgear and jump to the conclusion that the gentleman is a Muslim terrorist out to kill infidels. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Sikh’s have been attacked and murdered by Muslims for centuries. They don’t like Muslims very much because of this. (Yes, this is an understatement). There have been some pretty nasty battles between the two groups in Asia. (Asia in the case is this British definition which includes India and the Middle East)

Now, how do you tell a Sikh man from an Islamic Jihadi? It’s actually very easy. First, start with the headgear.

The Turban worn by Sikh’s are very neat, clean and colorful. The Sikh’s, both male and female are firm believers in neatness and cleanliness. Sikh men also wear beards of varying length. I believe this is mandated by their religion, however I’m not sure. If a member of the Sikh faith sees this, please add a comment to confirm or correct me.

More importantly, Sikh’s have never attacked the United States. They do not hold a gun to your head and tell you to convert or die. In fact, according to Wikipedia, Sikh’s generally don’t go looking for converts. They generally assimilate into their adopted country, with the exception of maintaining the requirements of their faith. I’ve seen several Sikh’s walking along in business suits and carrying a briefcase.

So, when you see someone with a clean appearance who is wearing a turban, he is probably a Sikh. Just nod politely. If you happen to see someone who is thinking of doing something stupid, tell him, or them, that the man they see isn’t a Muslim and educate them. Remember, Sikh’s are cool.
