Good day all. Fox News is reporting that Donald Trump is receiving up to $100 million from Sheldon Adelson in his run for President.
Adelson has been a big donor to Republicans over the years. Without a doubt, people will start screaming about Trump accepting the money and “What is Adelson buying?” Personally, I don’t think he’s buying anything, but you just know the Democrats led by that great example of honesty, Hillary Clinton, will try to make something out of it. In any case, here are some of the details from Fox News:
Billionaire Republican donor Sheldon Adelson is reportedly willing to give Donald Trump as much as $100 million for his presidential campaign — a purported record-setting amount for the wealth casino magnate. Adelson pledged the amount to Trump, the presumptive GOP presidential nominee, during a meeting last week in New York, two GOP sources told The New York Times, which first reported the story.
Trump self funded his primary run and was able to do it very inexpensively. However, the general election is going to require a large number of resources and even Trump couldn’t finance all that by himself.
Trump will indeed need the support. Much of the billionaire businessman’s success in the primary race came from his ability to fund his own campaign and tell voters that he is not beholden to corporate, Wall Street or lobbyists’ interests.
Which, even with Adelson’s donation, still holds true. Why you ask? Because the donation is public, so everyone will know about it, (unlike a lot of money funneled to the Democrats and Clinton campaign), and Trump can, and no doubt will talk about what he and Adelson discussed in their meeting. One thing about Mr. Adelson, he is a major supporter of Israel, as is Donald Trump. I suspect that’s really the only thing Adelson might be expecting. A “refresh” of our support for Israel. He knows that Cankles will throw Israel under the bus as soon as the check from ISIS clears.
The Times reports that the Las Vegas-based Adelson’s commitment to Trump will result in Adelson scaling back his contributions to congressional Republicans, who are in a tough fight to keep control of the Senate.
There is only so much money, but I suspect that Trump, unlike Obama and the Democrats, will work to bring funds into the Republican down ticket races as well as his own.
Exactly how Adelson would contribute to Trump’s effort is unclear. But such a large sum would require him, after giving directly to the Trump campaign, to donate through a super PAC because they allow unlimited donations. (Trump so far has been outspoken about the amount of influence super PACs have in politics.)
No surprises there, thanks to the idiocy of our campaign finance laws. A donor should be able to give as much as he or she wants directly to a campaign. It just needs to be public so the voters can see and can also ask “So, what is he going to get for all that money?”
I have no idea how much Clinton and the Democrats have salted away for this race, but it’s going to be a lot. The last presidential election ran several billion dollars as I recall. People may complain about all that money, but this is a big country and advertising and campaigning isn’t cheap. However, I do expect Trump to spend the money a lot better than Jeb Bush did in the primaries. Between his campaign and his political action committees, he blew about $150 million for basically…nothing. Now, if I coujld just figure out how to get people to donate money to me….
