Sniper in Las Vegas

Good day all. This story is still developing so the 72 hour rule is in effect. Last Night, there was a sniper attack on a country music concert in Las Vegas, Nevada. At least 50 people have been killed and hundreds wounded.

Details, as you would expect, are still coming out. The murderer has been identified as Stephen Paddock. He was 63 years old and from what little I can see, doesn’t fit the profiles we know of crazy ass mass shooters. The investigation hopefully will find out why Paddock did all this.

For the gun controllers, you can bet they will start screaming “BAN, BAN, BAN!” as soon as possible. As to what gun or guns were used, we will have to wait for the police to release the information. I would hazard a guess that he wasn’t using the an AR-15. That fires a .223 or 5.56mm round and the number of fatalities makes me think he was using something much heavier. There was also the range he fired from along with the height.

If I’m reading things correctly, he was at least 300 yards away and 32 stories up. That puts him about 320-450 feet above the concert area. This is not something you just show up and start shooting. You need to have some idea of what you’re doing. I’ll let those who handle rifles at those kind of ranges comment on difficulties and skill levels.

Other things that have been reported are that he was in the hotel since the 28th of September. Apparently, he had set up some sort of monitoring system to see the police arrive. He was discovered when all the smoke from his gunfire tripped off the smoke detector in his room. When the police blew the door and went in, the suspect had shot himself.

There is way to much we don’t know as of this posting. Eventually, things will sort themselves out. Perhaps we’ll find a note or a letter will show up somewhere. From the reports, it doesn’t look like the suspect did much on social media, so no clues will be found on Facebook.

On the political side, I’ve already mentioned that the gun banners will soon be in high dungeon, demanding bans, confiscations, and all their usual nonsense. We may also hear from the Concealed Carry and Open Carry groups, although that would surprise me. At the ranges this crime took place, a handgun would have been worthless. I’m not sure police with M-4’s, M-16’s and AR-15’s would have been able to do much more then spray bullets in the general area where the criminal was, and they probably would have missed by several floors.

My deepest sympathies to the families who lost loved ones to this psycho, and it is my deepest hope that all those wounded recover fully and quickly. Eventually, we will find out the truth of this situation, and it won’t surprise me one bit that everything now being reported, will be wrong.
