Ship blocks Suez Canal

Good day all. Just for something different, there seems to be a small problem with one of the main shipping routes used by everyone. A cargo ship transiting the Suez Canal has managed to get itself turned sideways and wedged in tight.

The Suez Canal has been in existence since the mid 1800’s. It cuts through the Suez peninsula from the Red Sea and into the Mediterranean sea. It has been expanded over the last 100+ years and fought over for almost as long. The canal cuts travel time for shipping by weeks and months. Instead of going around the horn of Africa or the tip of South America, they sail serenely through the canal and then out into the Atlantic, or Indian ocean, depending where they’re going.

The ship, the Ever Green, is a honking big container ship, and apparently was hit with a gust of wind, turned sideways in the canal, and run aground. This blocked all access to the canal and has disrupted shipping globally. Salvagers are working around the clock to free the ship. Meanwhile ships are stacked up at either end waiting to go through, and accountants globally are tearing their hair out at the costs being incurred.

It looks like it’s going to take a few days to clear this thing, since they have to bring in tugs and dredging equipment from either end of the canal. I would not like to be the ship owner, the captain or the helmsman of that ship once everything is sorted out and the ship is freed. I can see this going to court and the insurance company, whoever holds that policy, trying to get out of paying damages. Oh well, it sucks to be them.
