Good day all. This is the Angry Systems Administrator. It’s been a while since I posted anything, primarily due to the Angry Webmaster keeping me locked up in fear of the latest variant of the Fauci Virus. However, I have been taking the time to get a little work done, and the latest upgrade to our little network has been completed.
For years, we have been stuck with Comcast, (Later rebranded to Xfinity), as or sole high speed internet provider. It was a monopoly situation where we are located and Comcast, or “Comcrap” as many people refer to them, acted as any monopoly would. They hiked prices and didn’t put a lot into upgrading the infrastructure. The data caps they put in place also angered everyone.
Last year though, I noticed a lot of cable trucks out and about, stringing up new lines. At first I didn’t think much about it, then noticed the name on the trucks. It was Consolidated Communications. I took another look at the wire they were stringing and saw it was, in fact, Fiber Optic lines, not standard copper. This got my attention and I did a little research.
Our locale was bringing in Consolidated to compete with Comcast. Shortly afterwards, we started getting the junk mail from them under the name of “Fidium.” I made some calls and found out that they were going to be doing internet service “In the near future.” Then, about 2 weeks ago, the office received a call that they were lighting up the fiber in our area and were we still interested?
Oh HELL YES!
I asked a few questions, one or two that stumped the very nice person I was speaking to. She put me on hold and then came back quickly with the answers. I was satisfied and scheduled the installation. That install was completed Tuesday, December 28th. We purchased the 250mbs download and upload package. (They offer up to a gigabit up and down) This is more then twice as fast on the download then what we were getting from Comcast and the upload isn’t even worth discussing. (Ok, it was about 5mbs)
Even better is the price point. With no contract required, we will pay $60/month including hardware. (We aren’t able to use our own routers or “modem” sadly) that also includes most fees, although that will always fluctuate. After the first year, the cost goes up to $80/month, which is still less then what we were paying Comcrap for crappy service.
So, how are things performing? It has surpassed what we expected. On our streaming services into the Anger Central Entertainment Center, we have noticed an improvement. I haven’t done a lot of uploading as yet, however I expect that to be significantly better. The best part to date? No Data caps!
Since part of what the Angry moron does with regards to his Real World Job can consist of moving a lot of data around, and that we’ve all been forced to work out of our homes thanks to the “Great Panicdemic of 2020-2021-2022,” this caused him a number of issues. Obviously, it’s only been a few days and we haven’t even seen our first bill, but I think things are going very well. Oh, and our Comcrap account? I canceled that the same day as the installation of the Fidium service.
Thank you for your time.
